I am not surprised. This is what I knew before I came to Canada. For the rest of the world one DOES NOT become a citizen of that country just because one was born there. Citizenship in that country is not automatic just because one was born in that country. Your parents have to be citizens in that counmtry at the time of your birth. The only countries in the world where one automatically gains citizenship from birth in those countries are the US, Canada, Australia even if one's parents are illegal, students, one was born in an airplane over the skies of the US or Canada. My former colleague in Brussels is a French citizen even tho she never lived in France and was born in Belgium but her parents are French citizens. In Europe your parents citizenship determines your citizenship NOT the location of your birth.[/quote

Not quite correct, my daughter was born in France from a Spanish mother (me) and a British father. We had to decide when she was born, if we wanted her to be French. We declined as it seemed a little strange to have a 3 people family (she was our first child), and each be a different nationality.

This was almost 28 years ago. Don´t know if laws have changed. dunno

patmac: I wonder if the OP's folks were legal when they arrived in America???Could they have been among the many who arrived at Ellis Island ??As for the quote about the sign on the Statue of Liberty....Totally funny....But of course in no way intentional...

john12196341: i find it hard to believe that the white house would stop deporting illegals back to mexico. this is just another example of the president trying to suck up to the hispanic vote. these people with all due respect are in this nation illegally and shouldn't be able to get benefits,go to college for free, taking away jobs and not going by the law to get in here in the first place. this nation cannot afford having those people in here. for example. the border states and california are broke because of them. some people may call it crule to deport them but most people favor deportation whether they are adults, children or both. alos look at the crime rate along the border. it is committed by those people who deal in drugs and gun trafficing. it is time to get tough and close the border pernamently, jail those who come across here illegally, arrest and fine those businesses who are them, have english the only lanuage speaking here and use the military to help the border patrol patrol along the border. finally we should put a sign on the statue of liberty saying "no vacancy". even the legal hispanics don't like illegals coming in to the U.S. we should impose the punishment like mexico has for people who go into their country. they have long jail sentences. plus tell mexico either stop those people from coming into the U.S. or we will ban all travel and trade.
Sed us your poor , your tired, your huddeled masses yearning to be free . . .. . . . . . . .Whoops wait a second. . . . . . . . . . . . .Sorry no vacancy . . . . . rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

CaptainCrunch: My maternal Great Grand Parents came over from Germany, through Ellis Island. They did it legally and became citizens. My Paternal Grand Parents came from Wales. They also came through Ellis Island and also became citizens. I used to live in southern California and the illegal aliens problem there is unbelievable. They work for cash and show no visible means of income and receive so many benefits that citizens can not get. Welfare; which they have never paid, subsidized housing, free health care, food stamps and the list goes on. I am in favor of rounding up EVERY illegal alien in the USA and deporting them. I could round up about 10,000 a day. Just go to any home depot or hardware store early in the morning. I am also in favor of fining and fining heavily any company or individual who hires illegal aliens. It is amazing that all of the people who do not see the illegal aliens as problem in the USA are from foreign/non-US countries. How can you possibly berrate this individual making this post? If you are not in this country/USA then cannot possibly see the damage it is doing to this country/USA? If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I don't agree with any form of illegal immigration but sometimes we have to look at both sides of an argument! If people actually know the real reasons illegal immigrants are coming to the US some won't express as much bigoted views. Some may argue that the United States is indirectly responsible for the immigration crisis. There are many things that the government will never reveal to civilians so we may never know the real reasons for some problems in our society. As for children born of illegal immigrants in the US I can understand why some are in favor of them staying here especially if those children have never been incarcerated or have ever committed a crime. Most were too young to make any decisions about their future and will be going back home to a country and a way of life they’re unaccustomed to or never knew.

well she didn't have an AUTOMATIC French citizenship because she was born in France? did she? This is what I am referring to. My nephew was also born in France 1990. My sister had to apply for citizenship for him. She was not a French citizen herself (neither was the father of the boy) and French citizenship for him was not automatic. I hear your daughter can be a British citizen because her father is British. This is since 1979 when Margaret Thatcher put that in place. I know this from my British friend whose son was born in the US.

Yes, you can apply but it is not automatic by birth. In France now you can apply after age 16. In the US and Canada it is automatic by birth in the US or Canada. You don't have to apply.

Seems the best thing to do would be to adopt Mexico's illegal immigration laws. (some of the most punitive in the world) laugh
