galrads: We've been taking it in the keister by the bankers for near 100 years now and few of our current leaders care to make things right again.

You can't very well ask the mafia to make things right for its victims.
They don't work that way.

RayfromUSA: For one thing "debt" is not held.
Treasury bonds are held.

That they are denominated in dollars is normal because we are talking about US debt to foreign countries, not foreign countries' debt to the US.

The US can't print up bonds in other currencies.
Not legally anyway.

They can only legally counterfeit US dollars.

Meant denominated. Ray, you got me :p now stop counterfeiting your dollars :p

that's a great talent!!

I think the worst thing that happened to our economy was the shift from a manufacturing and agricultural base to a service economy. I have been hearing about trends for some manufacturing jobs to return to the states due to various reasons like threats of terrorism adding to the cost of doing business in parts of the world where labor is cheap.

The service aspect of our economy is good too and the easiest to export with the least overhead with a profit potential equal or greater to that of hard goods. And we need something to right the trade imbalances with countries like China
