Will be going into Hospital to have the op on my back in the next two or three weeks'I know I will not be able to sit down for a while.
I am about two and a half hours from Benalla so was wondering if it was against the road rules as a passenger to lie down in the back of our Station Wagon even if the pain got too much on the way home.

Tried to Google the answer but no answers there. sigh

Too dangerous isn't it?
Couldn't you pay for the ambulance ride home?
You should be able to lay on an incline in your seat with a belt strapped around the seat and your chest?

Martia, i had a back op in 2002 and i got a letter from the doc to take to Vicroads as i wasnt allowed to drive for 6 months but i could sit/lay down without a seat belt. Was basically given 6 months grace.
Talk to your doc and vicroads.grin

Thanks for that Nature.
Will do as you suggest BJ very useful advice.

Hi Dags I have never had private insurance havent needed it as I have only been on the waiting list for a couple of months as it is severe enough to go on the quite urgent list....the surgeon is the best there is in Vic anyway.

As for an ambulance even if I was insured wouldent use it as could be waiting forever to be ferried back to Benalla as it is.

The trick is if you need medical attention for anything and a trip to hospital is needed scream the place down so to speak and it wont take long to get it fixed quick sharp as its no good being stoic about it as you could wait forever.

Although didnt have to make a fuss this time as the MRI scan showed the bulging disc was severe.

I hope all goes well for you Martia, I would think thats the Hospital wont let you travel unless your back is up to it.It is illegal to travel laying down.Patient transport should be available ,I do hope you find relief after the op Ive heard they are very successfull.

Hi Martia, hoping it works out well and the op works.

You will need to get a Doctor's Cert so that you do not have to wear a seatbelt, otherwise you are firstly breaking the law and more importantly, almost negating any insurance if some idiot runs into the car and you get hurt.

Why not try for a Patient Transfer to Benalla Hospital for a bit of recovery before you go home. Means freeing up a bed in the Melbourne Hospital and might work on a comfy ride closer to home.

Hello my dear friend, firstly my thoughts are with you. My advice is not to rush home and try and get some rehab before you do. When I had mine done I was not even allowed to travel a great distance in a car and I had to fly home. We have what they call Isolatd travel allowance in Qld and so did not cost me anything. What are you having done? I had all my lower back fused except L1/L2. I had two cages put in for bone grafts. This was suppose to last 5 plus years but because all the rest of my back is a mess the L1/L2 has to be fused too. This means taking the rods out and putting longer rods in. I am putting it off as long as I can as the pain after is too fresh in my memory (make sure they give you plenty of drugs). I have recently been put on new meds and I am totally a different person. Even got my Libido Back, LOL, If you wan to ring me at all let me know and will Email my number to you again. I give you all my support and you will need everyones as well. So guys keep in touch with Martia through her time of need.teddybear heart wings bouquet
