The original Christmas Island "Kiritimati" was used for testing Nuclear Bombs

The name for the the small, self-governing island between Indonesia and Australia, was given as a tribute to the fact that it was discovered on Christmas day, 1643 by Captain William Mynors of the East India Ship Company.

During this period Britain gave control of the mining to the Singapore, which was followed by an invasion by the Japanese in 1942 and then a mutiny by Indian workers, who interned the residents of the island until the end of World War II.

Apparently, all of this was enough to make the British realize that perhaps Christmas Island, despite its happy name, wasn't quite worth all the trouble, and granted control of the island over to the Australian government in 1957, who then paid off the government of Singapore for their share in the Phosphate mining business.

Scotchy got turned around on his way to the city and had to go via Korumburra and Warragul, phewconfused

We sure did cop a lot of rain yesterday. around 60mil

With the Christmas Island thing, we have places in Aus. where people are jailed with no fences within country communities. A bit like Cadell in SA.
Why couldn't we just hold the boat people in country communities doing it tough and save ourselves a shgit load in the process?

We spend billions on detaining what?
A threat?
More like our own fears which are reinforced by politicians seeking an easy support base.
Bit like listening to Oregon radio on the West Coast US today where a restaurant owner was arguing why he had the right to frisk search patrons before entering his establishment to see if they were carrying guns so he could confiscate them. You then had the gun lobbyist on trying to argue why they should have the right to bear arms and carry them where they like etc, etc...

In 1957 the Australian government acquired Christmas Island from Singapore for a price of 2.9 million pounds. It officially became an Australian territory on 1 October 1958, an event which is celebrated each year on the first Monday in October.

Today there are approximately 1500 people living on the Island, although the population fluctuates depending on what sort of building contracts are on at any given time.

The population breakdown is 65% Chinese, 20% Malay and 15% European and other. Most are permanent residents of Australia and the majority holds Australian citizenship.

The Kampong: This is where the Malays live, down in Flying Fish Cove. The central feature is the Mosque as all the Malays are Muslim. They are called to prayer five times a day.
Poon Saan: This is where many Chinese families live. The Chinese name means literally "halfway up the hill".
Silver City: A mixture of Chinese and European with some Malay. Built in the 1970s, the aluminium/metal houses were supposed to be cyclone proof.
Drumsite: A mixture of European and Chinese workers. This area is right in the path of the red crab migration.
Settlement: This is where the commercial business and shops are located. Many Europeans also live in this area, close to the coast in large old colonial homes.

About time we said "Yes" to the USA leasing the place. Might get some of our money back. And they can 'man the boats' for those illegals.

A friend who is Ceylonese (and married to a Tamil) has followed the reports about the Sri Lankin refugee boat people closely. Oddest comment by her (yes, SHE) was that what she can make out is that these "refugees" are from well-off families. Not just the cost of getting here but they are commonly well-educated implying being well off financially.

She and her husband left for 'political' reasons, being obviously of different backgrounds, but went throught the proper channels to get here. It doesn't sound right coming from her when she says "these are not refugees, they are just trying to get here" but that is her opinion about her ex-countrymen (or women) she is talking about.

When daggy was smarting about his ladies immigration, i pointed out the Australian Immigration Act discriminates against non christians.
The Tamil are mostly christian and people like howard, abbot and co, hold a view this country should favor those married in the eyes of a non existent god or some like nonsense, which is a contradiction to the constitution, which accommodates all belief's.

The Tamil mostly flowed out of Tamil Nadu in India, as did the arms they used while using violence as they attempted to establish themselves in what has been for a long long time a prominently buddhist country.

Actually, I do wonder, if Christmas Island was not Aussie... I dont think boats would risk the longer journey to come here...

Its prolly because the trip is only a couple of days that they come.. but if it was much much longer, I really dont think people would chance it in those shanty vessels... idea

Great idea Kizzy...

The 'owners' could really build an Asylum on the island, like Alcatraz for instance...finding staff to handle all the inmates might prove a bit difficult, unless some of the saner inmates could also serve as both admin and security staff...sort of your own version of the old French Devil's Island Prison and asylum for the insane...just have plenty of straight-jackets on hand and psychotropic drugs...grin

Thats right Merri , to be honest I had no idea Christmas Island was so far from our shores ,There is no way they woul;d attempt to travel 2600 kilometres in such flimsy vessels.

and todays good news is
Turkey's government has held an emergency security meeting after one of its fighter jets was shot down by Syrian forces over the Mediterranean Sea.

The F4 fighter jet disappeared off the radar just near the Syrian border.

Syria's military says the aircraft was flying low, well inside Syrian territorial waters, when it was shot down.

I understand about 3 days in London. About all I could stand when there. But get out of the Big Smog and they are really nice people.

Go to any village and when they know you are Aussie, it is "Do you know my cousin Shirley, she migrated to Australian 40 years ago. You must know her."rolling on the floor laughing And the Scots are the friendliest, when they know you are not English.
