daggyone: Last time I flew back from Thailand, there weren't too many people between Melbourne and the Pilbara coast.

Ummm. Silly question but have you travelled there? Obviously not.

Where the average rainfall is less than 10" per year, it is called a desert for an obvious reason. Most of that area receives at most 5" in less than 1 month in a "good" year. I grew up in an era where children in these regions had, by the age of 10, had never seen rain.

Do not harp on about "empty Australia" like others, take the time to see what is out there and then realise what is sustainable in those conditions. It is not possible to have paddy fields without water.

A mate has just built a house in the Phillipines costing him 4M in local currency. About $AU20,000. And considered one of the best in the area. Beer had just had a massive increase in cost if you want a cold one from the local. Now costs the equivalent of 25 cents at the resorts.

daggyone: We've only got ourselves to blame for that.
We need more migration just to keep the population from going backwards.
Going by the 2011 Census data just released, migration made up 55% of our population growth for the year.
By the way, our population grew 1.4% for the year.
I'm amazed with the comments here making out like we are being swamped by migrants???

read that too Daggy and ummmmmm....

3/4 of that population growth was through migrants...1/4 was people actually born here

daggyone: My comments about aide are aimed at keeping people who are hungry full of food and waring regions peaceful with our efforts at peace keeping in the region otherwise all the more reasons for people to boat it over to our safe shores.
Take money away from those regions and you get an avalanche of boat people.

If my lot were running things there would not be an 'avalanche of boat people', because a warning would be issued that after a certain date all boats would be sunk on sight . . . and we would.

confused Last time I looked in the paper, the Chinese were getting Bob Hawke to broker a deal for that land so they could irrigate it using Lake Argyle. You could set up many Las Vegas styled cities out there quite easily.

even if we ignore that Lake Argyle was so many times bigger than Sydney harbour and can fill in 3 weeks heavy monsoonal rainfall.
