The Summer Olympic Games are coming to London in a month. England has been preparing for it for years. The US National Teams are having their final selection competitions now. As are most of the National Teams of the other countries that will attend.

So?

Boring?

Exciting?

Attending?

Not Attending?

This is likely to be one of the most watch sport events in the world as TV viewers will take in hours of the competition. They have a large number coming to a London area that has been booking rooms at high rates.

So?

Your picks for the best in Swimming? In Diving? Track and Field? Team Sports?

Exciting but I do prefer the winter olympics.

Of course I want the U.S. to win everything BUT, in the end, whoever wins is an olympian and I will be happy for their dedication to train for hours and hours to earn the medal. Once an olympian always an olympian unless your name is Lance Armstrong who in my opinion was on steroids.

Expensive!!!

All prices at least trebbled for flights, accommodation etc

Disgusting!! Greed knows no bound!!! all the businesses concerned were already going to make a financial killing with the extra custom ... but to trebble prices? talk to hand

In the U.S. thousands of long-term renters were given notices to leave so that the units could be leased out during the Olympics at much higher than normal rates. No amount of reasoning could be done with the apartment owners; they were adamant that the shortfall was much lower than the overall increase. In short, they were positive that the units could be easily re-rented at the same or higher monthly rates as soon as the Olympics left town. Groups of renters attempted class action lawsuits, which were summarily thrown out of court before even being heard. I just read that the same thing is happening in England. Renters (without long term leases) have no recourse. A landlord may request his unit back whenever he wants, and does not have to provide any explanation whatsoever. Several times large groups ask their state representatives and senators to write bills, etc... to help tenants, but they usually get lost in a pile of paperwork. It is one more nod to corporate greed.

I had heard that as well. Time are tough all over. So when you get the chance......clearly when events are planned like this, there is a chance.

The sponsoring body (in this case the Olympic Games) should make sure that the corporate sponsors don't price hike. If your firm can add the five Olympic rings to a promotion materials and still price hikes.....
thumbs down

Of course you want the US to win everything. We need the precious metals in the medals to help cover our national debt.)))

I have known a few US Olpmpians. Most are class acts. Though if I told my college roomie that.....155 pound greco freestyle wrestling bronze winner in the Athens games ....he would faint.

Ah well it was so sweet to cover his austin heally totally in snow one winter holiday break. He thought the car was stolen from parking lot. he reproted it to the police and called his dad to pick him up. Two weeks later....we return to school....there sat his car. The snow had melted.

I did not tell him until summer vacation (4 months later) and I was leaving the dorm.....that I had covered his car with snow. As I left....all I said...."it has to be easier to find your car now, with out all that snow on it".

It took a moment to set it. Then he got this very strange ....like he wanted something...er then someone to destroy. I was 20 yards away and headed to my car. He was small.....but really tough. I had seen him drop a starting 260 pound middle linebacker from the football team one time. I did not want the summer to be spent in a hospital.))

So you let someone you knew go through all the hassle of reporting his car stolen, have to organise someone pick him up, and other untold related hassles, and let him spend 2 weeks vacation without his car "just for a laugh"? Wow!! But not an impressed "wow" ...

Which bit exactely to do with that guy were you jealous of? Or were you just feeling mean for no reason? dunno

I'm surprised that TT would do such a thing. I've always thought of him as an levelheaded individual but now I'm seeing a colorful side of him that's not flattering. He did that "just for a laugh". And he laughed while his roommate worried about his car for two weeks. I think something of this magnatude is bred out of jealousy. Maybe because his roommate was an olympian OR that the roommate got the girl he wanted. The roommate should have used his 155 lbs to beat the crap out of TT. Sometimes a little violence goes a long way. very mad

American College and University.....is gags and pranks much of the time.
You have to develop a sense of humor to go along with a education. Makes you a rounded person. He got his pranks in on me as well.

You seem overly sensitive to a college prank that happened back 1972. I am pretty sure he has forgotten by now. But then again, I have not.

As part of a gags and prank culture, it gives it a different flavour grin

If you haven´t forgotten may be he hasn´t either ...

I'd love to go there and watch some of theses games, but it cost too much for tourist to do other things in UK that we can do elsewhere at half the cost. Jest my two cents.....

Next time I saw my roomie, he was in the national wrestling competition to make the team for Athens, about 12 years later.
I was living CA at the time. And the team competition was in Squaw Valley. So I made it a point to swing by ans ee him.

We had lunch. He did not say anything about it. But I got the hint when I went back to my car to leave....and it was filled with rocks.....that he has not forgotten. wow

Ah just joking.

I did ask him if still had the Austin Healey and if he had driven it to Squaw Valley for the national team competition. He was married now with a young one......so the very small Austin Healey was gone. I did buy lunch. Maybe that helped to sooth his angry. At least he did not throw a two legs take down on me and pile drive my head into the floor
