If you work with someone who has a disability Treat and respect them as a person normal the way they want to be treated.

Work and Equalality
] Equal opportunity folks people with a disability are as human as anyone else. I'm not talking about myself i'm sticking up for people with a disability why they have rights to do anything they have dreams they have ability to speak up for themselves if they can't they'll find a way of communicating with other people not just people with a disablity also normal people same go's for work. How do people with a disability pay for their own things like bills and going to the chemist to get their stuff what about voting everyone with a disability has the right to vote go shopping go have some fun if i moved out of home i'd buy my own furniture my own supermarket food and beverages and my own bed to sleep in my own car so i can drive to get where i want to be. if people with a disability can't be normal then there is a problem with people seeing different ways of living and working. true??

i'd like to see some nice answers

There are lots of disabled people now living in shared housing out in the community who they used to lock away in institutions.
They mow lawns, work in recycling centres etc, etc...
But should they be allowed to drive? - yes if their disability doesn't impede their ability to maintain a safe journey not just for themselves but also other road users.

One of my co workers lives in a housing trust place here in Adelaide .And the poor thing is surrounded by them .As I understand it they do not mix well with the community and make their neighbours life hell .My co worker often tells us how bad they are .
Housing trust will not move my co worker or the problem tennats .
I understand its not all people with disabilities in the entire country .But Australia needs to know the exercise of having them in the community is not working.
Sorry to highjack thread

But placing them into detention style accomodation is just criminal.

I think the excercise IS working in the majority of cases. It gives those people a quality of life they wouldn't have in an institution. Generally they have supervisors staying or living in the house with them who help with financial matters and socialisation. No doubt there will be some who aren't well socialised and create havoc.

They say hoarding things is a sign of mental illness, everyone does it, just some of us are at the extreme range where you can't live a normal life without falling over all the crap you're hoarding

Well I guess its hard to say one thing or the other .
We seem to have so many problems here in Adelaide dealing with the issue of mental .
As seen on the news one poor lady with mental health issues handcuffed to a bed in the womens prison hospital. Was on the tv incident went before parliament I think.Even had prison gaurds doing lock downs .at one stage they were going to transfer her to Victoria before a bed was found in the correct facility.Something about the time to put her there was the result of industrial action.
Then we have the case of a guy who was unstable and took his fathers gun and shot neighbours including a child.

So whats the answer ?
Out in the community where some harm innocent people .
And I've seen unstable people in the ER of public hospiatls its not pretty when they threaten to kill everyone doctors nurses police etc.

I look at the doods here all wandering around town to have a coffee, go to the opp shops and collect salt n pepa shakers etc... they have their life and are happy all mingling in with society.
I know I wouldn't like to be locked away in an institution.

Hi

I see people who are mentally affected quite a lot... Its not pretty, and at this time of the year, they damn well stink... because they choose to not wash, keeps them warm... They are offensive in their personal hygene, but as they dont know better, there is naught we can do.... Except... I would not take any child anywhere near Adelaide Central markets... children do not need to witness the goings on there..

So, I think essentially, there is not the resources to monitor , but we have a choice to avoid places where they are likely to be. sad flower

Have this mother come in to the shop every alternate day with her adorable girls 2yo & 3yo and all she seems to do is yell obscenities at them and tell them off for doing what, I don't know. The poor things, what a life they have in front of them.sigh

Hey merriweather longtime no talk (my fault)
Good ole Adelaide forgotten about such places .
My eldest and I had one come up and hand us some stuff .While we were going to watch a footy game at Alberton. He was raving about the Port Adelaide Football club being tied up with The family murders!
Had one of our drivers come back from doing a drop at our head office in Adelaide, a few years back .Bit shaken he just missed hitting a large cardboard box .Once he stopped out stepped a homeless person!!
So they are everywhere in Adelaide !!

If someone has a disability I will never treat them any different than anyone else, if they need help they can ask. Its not rude, its how they want to be treated aswell, yes sometimes you do need special condideration, but i wont go watch what I say or keep asking them if they need help. If you do treat them differently stop, my friend is disabled, and i wont treat him differently to any of my others. Even he said that he just wants for everone treating him differently. thats just my 2 cents

The world is a cruel place, especially for those who are considered 'outside the norm' (whatever the norm is roll eyes )

More power to you for supporting your friend thumbs up

And often the benefit of having a friend or family member who has a disability of some sort is that we develop insight and an empathy for others in the community who are also doing it tough.

Love your work, and keep it up .. there can never be too many advocates in the world wine

Hey Young fellow, welcome to the threads... cswelcome

Its just lovely to have a young point of view... and it reminds me of something my own son did around about your age..

He had a friend who had a mild schizophrenic disorder, and he hung with this guy.... I remember my son telling me pretty well what you said in your post... He treated and spoke to his friend as normal, and on one occasion when the friend was having a rough night, he told him to get a grip, or go home.. the friend calmed instantly. With lots of support, from his family and friends, this person grew to be able to hold a job, get married and have a happy loving family...

I honestly think if he had been treated differently, he would not have reached this goal...

Kudos to you young ones... Great attiutude... thumbs up

Well I think inclusion is paramount to helping people with disabilities to live an enriched life.I have noticed that people with disabilities can work better than people with out disabilities and contribute better to the economy.
