I've always had a trip to Australia close to the top of my bucket list. After the attitude toward Americans, expressed by some on this site, I'm not so sure I want to go. Do most Australians have a bad view of Americans or is it just the few on here that's the problem?

Are you confusing "views of Americans"(the people) with views of "views of politics" (heads of state)? conversing dunno

Oh good gawd! Don't go by anything anyone says here about Americans. You wouldn't get out of bed, let alone off an airplane!!

Go where you want and don't worry what others think of you.

Oh and a side note. I used to live in Bryan, Texas, only for nine months back in 1982 but it was fun at the time!!!

Good luck and go where the heck you want!! teddybear

The Australians I know on here have been friendly and in fact when the "attack America" threads show up, Australians announce how much they love America. There's always on in every bunch that has a negative attitude about everything.

Book your airline ticket for Aussie Land and enjoy.cheering

Every country has individuals that will cause you to turn your head wondering why you ever looked it's way. I believe you would enjoy Australia, however, obviously, I am biased.

I've had two friends who moved there and stayed for life. Both return to the U.S. for vacations every 7 or 8 years. Here is what I understand: It's kind of like a sports team--you have to "prove" yourself, like the new kid in school. I think that's natural, actually. Australians are hearty, rugged. It's kind of like you're at a Dude Ranch, and have to learn to ride before they accept you. JMO

laugh I agree with Venus, too. I've met somewhere around forty Australians in my lifetime, and I find them all to be just great--it may take a bit to catch on to their sense of humor, but once you know it then it's very cool. For instance, one of my best Oz friends lives here, and when he sees me, he always says, "Oh crikey, there's gum on my shoe", or, "well look, the bad penny always comes 'round". That sort of thing.

your right about our sense of humour Rohaan. Most people dont understand that we are a nation that laughs at ourselves and the silliness of life. A lot of our sayings mean something totally different and far removed from the actual words spoken.hug

You should enjoy your trip here. Every site has its share of loonies from just about every nation who want to get stuck into others. Ignore them.

One tip - don't go saying anything like 'hi I am from the US and were great and you should be more like us' That would probably turn people off. It is a popular stereotype that I think is not deserved as I have never heard an American speak along those lines except on forums.

Enjoy yourself.

I cannot speak for Autralians but I can tell you that my son jsut returned from Australia where he went to present an engineering paper. He said autralians are very friendly and don't care much about what is happening in the rest of the world - politics and such. At least this was his impression. he loved it there.

so perhaps if u are not the too political/judging type- if you aren't that type, I'd imagine you find it well

That would be my guess as well.
Aussies are very direct, and will say exactly what they are thinking (I admire the honesty).

There's lots of people that aren't impressed with American Foreign policy but don't confuse that with disliking Americans.

Go to Oz, You'll love it and it's going to be a wonderful experience. Just so you know, New Zealanders aren't fond of act of Terrorism on their shores, so I suggest you don't mention that when your down there.

(They are aware the Americans knew in advance what the French Secret Service were going to do!!)
You should also be aware the tantrum the Americans threw when the Australians mentioned they did not want nuclear powered ships, or weapons in their harbours....and the Americans made a great fuss about that as well.

You just might not be aware of some of the things that your Government has done that have pissed off the Australians and New Zealanders.

They won't blame you though! It's a very friendly country!
