We have sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq.
Sooooo, is the US still snubbing us because of our Nuclear Free policy?
Bit petty isn't it?

Doesn't seem so.

""The Prime Minister says the barring of the New Zealand Navy from docking in Pearl Harbour during a massive international defence exercise is not a snub.""

I would've imagined you did however, your own PM states otherwise so I assumed you hadn't.

Sorry.

Sorry.
Is that because all politicians are honest and trustworthy and you believe everything they say??

Nope. Because he said it as reported. If you wish to believe otherwise then go right ahead but you haven't provided anything for us to believe otherwise.

Sorry, I thought it was common knowledge.

We are a nuclear free nation, and most are proud of it.
We don't allow nuclear ships in our waters, of any nationality.
They must be declared non nuclear.
US will not tell us whether the ships they send are nuclear powered or not, therefore we don't allow their ships in.

Though the PM has stated something, he also does not want to sour any relations that may encroach our trading potential with the US.

It is very obvious to me that our Navy ships are excluded from berthing at Pearl Harbour for the maritime exercise, as an ongoing punishment for our Nuclear Free status, but wondering if perhaps someone else knows better, such as the berthing co-ordinator...???

It is however, snub is not the word I would use as your country first saw fit to ban US vessels from your ports.

Indeed and good for you! Now given that the bulk of the US heavy ships are nuclear it seems you have since 1985 banned the US navy from your nation and subsequently gave up the role of being a strong ally in ANZAC. Now you believe you are entitled to full rights for some reason or another.

doh

I can assure you that the bigger ones are and, they need the smaller ones to protect them at sea hence, the battle groups can't be split up because of your policies.

I believe you guys did that quite well yourselves in '85.

Punishment? Golly, you want the US to help protect you but won't allow them near you.

The US does alot more damage than help anyone while they are 'protecting'. What we don't need is their ships Nuclear or otherwise anywhere in the South Pacific.

Yes, the 'snub' is still a knee-jerk response to our 26 year old legislation. They need to get over it. We won't be changing it anytime soon and in the light of last year's events in Japan we will be joined by even more nations with nuclear-free status (there are already many out there).

John Key made the statement that it wasn't a snub simply so as to not look caught out by the fact that our government, while oficially invited to the event in Pearl Harbour, was not informed that our representative ship would not be allowed to berth there.
It was an exercise in avoiding embarrassment and saving face from our unfortunately sycophantic administration.

It pretty rank since we hosted US ground troops for manoeuvres on NZ soil very recently yet they choose to reciprocate this way.

Of course, all of this matters not one iota to the US government or the vast majority of its constituents, most of whom have no clue even where NZ is, principally because we are too small for anyone up there to care about us.

With friends like that...

Hi Bluefish,

If the choice is go nuclear or get into Pearl Harbour. I guess us irish are banned as well. We are neutral as well so probably are banned from all US bases. Won't be shedding too many tears over that.

Ireland doesn't have a Blue Water Fleet. What's more, we hosted one of the US Aircraft Carriers a few years ago on a visit. And they're more than welcome back, by me at least.

Then why are you still in ANZAC?

Rubicon76: Yes, the 'snub' is still a knee-jerk response to our 26 year old legislation.

The snub you guys have carried on for more than three decades.

They need to get over it. We won't be changing it anytime soon and in the light of last year's events in Japan we will be joined by even more nations with nuclear-free status (there are already many out there).

They are over it otherwise you wouldn't have been there to begin with. Seems when you don't berth with the rest of the organization as you are exercising with a different element you guys are pissed because you view everything as if the shoe were on the other foot.

Rubicon76: John Key made the statement that it wasn't a snub simply so as to not look caught out by the fact that our government, while oficially invited to the event in Pearl Harbour, was not informed that our representative ship would not be allowed to berth there.

I think he made it because you guys have had your silly policy in place snubbing the entire US navy for three decades and view anything you can pretend is in kind as some sort of insult.

Rubicon76: It pretty rank since we hosted US ground troops for manoeuvres on NZ soil very recently yet they choose to reciprocate this way.

You virtually banned their entire US navy from your country yet they did not respond in kind so what's your beef?

Rubicon76: Of course, all of this matters not one iota to the US government or the vast majority of its constituents, most of whom have no clue even where NZ is, principally because we are too small for anyone up there to care about us.

The US obviously believes you matter as if otherwise they wouldn't have wanted to cooperate with you after your hissy fit. That you and they are exercising together despite you not allowing their ships to port speaks volumes.

Well you just finished saying you don't want them there so now are complaining they are not friends?
