MADDOG69: And yet that is where you are wrong. For as I understand it, Greece (in all it's forms since then) has asked for their return pretty much from the start.
Didn't know that. Got a link to ascertain the exact date of the first request?
MADDOG69: Your Statute of Limitations argument doesn't hold water.
Well then, if it does not then the entire globe will now go into chaos as it all must revert back to what was at the time the naked ape came on the scene. All laws, agreements, deals and geographical locations of people who have been in place for eons will now have to be reassure with the entire planet being remigrated. Hell, the Greeks will have to relocate back to the Balkans and the Irish will have to return to Iberia. Have a nice trip but then again, I'll be busy moving from Spain and England to northern Canada (with a subsequent trip to Asia) and Sweden.
MADDOG69: As far as I see it, the Ottomans at the time of the Elgins was like the dying days of any empire especially in Greece... riddled with corruption and inefficiencies, bad morale, and hopelessly hijacked by interference by Russia and the British and as time went on, hijacked by their own non Turkish subjects. It's like forcing someone to sign a will on their deathbed.
Yes Lord Elgin had the entire Ottoman Empire at gunpoint.
MADDOG69: Though I'll agree that, in common language, 'possession is nine tenths of the law'.
Common law you mean. Indeed it does which leads to the same question of why the Greeks never protested until now. I conclude that they are the property of Britain and, if they are not, Greece ought to be very nice if they wish to see them again on Greek soil as part of a display which will encourage visitors to flock and spend money to see the complete works.
A further note, if we are all humans, democracy is part of us all, a voice for all mankind hence, the Marbles are part of all mankind. Greece seems to be thinking it is property while myself and many others believe it is the physical of an idea that came from there and, was realized to some extent there but traveled the globe with more sucess.
