Well I just spent over two hours complaining to Dell about 58 viruses on my computer. I bought this computer in May of this year but they said they couldn't delete them because I didn't have a software service package. They advised me that I could buy a service contract for $239 that would cover me for a year and four incidents. So what do you think I did?

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from the Microsoft site that will help alot.(Don't know why they do not just have it installed with their software in new Pc's??). I also have a program called PC Pitstop, there is a fee for this but it is far less than Norton would cost and Norton can be really annoying at times, I had it and chose to uninstall it.
montemonte: I bought the one from Dell when I was talking to them.
The representative said that if I renew it when it expires in a year that it will cost $110 instead of $239.
I have the free AVG virus protection and the Dell rep said that's why the viruses were able to get through because all the free AVG does is alert me that there is a virus which is what it. The free one doesn't block the virus from getting in. I might buy the Norton virus package or just stick with AVG but buy the one that I have to pay for. I guess when I loaded the free AVG I forgot that there are no free lunches. Everything comes with a price and in my case it was 58 viruses.
Not that keen on the Ruskies , may have a back door just for them . Robo likes the program

I have a Dell laptop and am using AVAST free. It seems OK. But once a year I wipe my hard drive and reinstall everything. I copy all my pics, docs etc to an external hard drive first. Takes a few hours but it's usually worth it and you know you're starting with a clean sheet.
GG, I'm not computer savvy so I would never attempt to do all that you suggested. I how to save my pics on a memory stik but when this computer was new I wasn't the one who loaded everything and did the setup procedure. It's a great idea to do that but I get freaky when I hear computer terminology.

That's a pity. If you were closer, I'd do it for you and teach you computer basics 101. PCs of any brand are vulnerable at the best of times. If a car was as unreliable as a pc, we'd all go back to using horses. That's what happens when technology races to market. I'm told if you can be bothered, that the Apple system is much much better but sadly, much more expensive.

That's exactly what I told my daughter after I bought this one that I wished I had bought an Apple and she said they are more expensive. This is a Dell All-In-One that I paid 600 dollars for it. I thought that was a lot of money to pay for a computer. I've always had hand-me-downs so this is my first new one.
