I think Its appalling the waste of money spent on the olympic games.
These people are not heros, there are sportsmen & women .The heros are the people struggling to feed their families & they are the ones who cant afford the $2400.00 ticket price !

Hi Kizzy, you have a right to your opinion, but I cannot see money wastage here...

Everyone needs a hero to emulate.
Countries, especially in the worn out from war middle east need to be seen in a good way and for those who send their best.. they need applauding.
Olympics unite the world as its a cheering and applauding event.. no matter who wins or losers... they are all winners in my eyes
Relationships building with the world... everyone will watch at least some of it on tele..
UK economics will do well with the influx of tourism.
Media stations will advertise companies
and I could go on and on... but I know you get my drift.

So for me, its a time of happiness, and poor people can also watch.
most have a tele.. if not the local will televise it..

You cannot expect $$ to be redirected always... we the tax payers need our rewards too australia

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing finished it for me , an estimated 1.5 million people were forced to move, thier homes bulldozed , their heritage wiped out , they were not compensated they were just destroyed ,If you feel your tax dollars entitle you to enjoy this then by all means please do so ,I for one however feel it is a moral disgrace! Riodejanero will also need to demolish slums to build their Olympic park for the 2016 games. If they wish to continue their ascent to the ranks of the Westernized developed world. The scandal is exposing the fragility of their ascent at the same time as it validates the power of open media to hold governments accountable. No one visits Barcelona to check out the Olympic Park It is a big white elephant. Likewise, tourists will go to Rio for the beaches and beautiful people, not for monuments to state-power and inequality. Not to mention the 2004 games in Athens, Greece. The government spent nearly $16 billion (from a budget of $1.6 billion)(idiots) to pay for new stadiums that are now barely occupied, part of that debt is leading them and possibly the rest of Europe into a downward spiral.

I understand your position and I know each nation is proud of their sporting achievments I just sometimes wish we could celebrate & recognise the people who help humanity instead of those that hurt them.
If the millions of dollars was directed to curing cancer or feeding the hungry, sustaining our fragile ecosystem, instead of fanfare and fireworksto show someone can run fast or swim quick shoot straight or jump high....In your heart or hearts which is more important?

My goodness!
Kizzy and I actually agree on something.
The Olympic Games is bread and circuses to distract the sheeple from what matters. It is a gross waste of money.
It is also two weeks of crap television. I want to be able to turn on the television and not have to watch sports that I find to be about as entertaining as watching paint dry.
For the record, I used to be a swimmer . . . coached by Laurie Lawrence.
As a result of this I have serious bone spur issues and my shoulders are screwed, worn out by years of following the black line up and down the pool, twice a day, six days per week.
It was my father's insane dream, not mine.

Kizzy, I think there is a time and place for everything... and nothing cheers people up more than a bit of international competition..

The olympics is a tradition, and a great moral boosting show, and it generates tons of money...

I love it...

and I really at this time dont care to discuss issues of a sad nature that plague the world. These issues will always remain... the goal posts do not change hugely as time goes on... but for me, right now... I want to watch the world compete..

and if UK puts it on... well good on them...The people there need a huge moral boost too... and it gives everyone an opening of discussion..a time to feel pride, and its celebration time..

Dont mix up the good and the bad... you'll end up with a pot full of mush...

Go Green and Gold... australia

Actually, Kizzy, there are cures for cancer and they have been known for quite some time. It is just that you will not get access to them because big pharma is not interested in curing cancer. The pharmaceutical companies want to treat cancer, not cure it. If they offer treatments that perhaps slow the progress of the disease (aka prolong your misery and death) they will make a lot more money than if they simply cure it.
For example, in the USA alone during 2005 about $200 billion was spent on cancer treatments. Do you really think that the likes of Roche, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, et al are interested in giving away that sort of profit in exchange for a warm and fuzzy glow because they cured cancer?
The cure for most cancers is vitamin B17, or laetrile, which can be obtained by eating apricot seeds. They are inside the kernel at the centre of the fruit.
This cannot be patented and sold for an extortionate profit, so you will never see it offerd by big pharma.
A significant proportion of the modern cancers are the result of the poisons that the food processing divisions of big pharma put into the processed and semi-processed foods that you can buy at the supermarket.
So at one end of the process they are creating the cancers and at the other they are profiting from offering ineffective treatments that usually serve only to prolong the processing dying.
You might also be interested to look at and .
I wish that there was a word more descriptive than evil to apply to big pharma, because they are beyond being merely evil.
As for concentration camps, no. Waste of money. My policy would be either get with the programme or leave. Subversives who did not want to leave voluntarily would be detained until some bleeding-heart social-liberal government somewhere offered them political asylum.
On the subject of concentration camps, did you know that it was the English who came up with the modern concept of concentration camps and death camps? Look up what the English did to Boer civilians during the Boer War.

The olympics have never generated more that the costs to host !London for example is costing billions ! about 7 billion more that they estimated !!!
$$$$$7 BILLION DOLLARS over budget,,Yep that seems like a fair price to pay to watch the elite 1% ers win or lose a race for the elite 1%ers , meanwhile a mother puts her children to bed hungry......
Beijing spent 58 BILLION dollars !!! plus dispaces 1 .5 million people but hey all for the the sake of a good show and a 100 shiny medals ...Money well spent ....not

In answer to your question Ajax,Ide like to see this waste spent elsewhere, If they stuck to the budget and put the proceeds towards humanitaian projects Ide be in agreeance but this show of blatent waste is sickening.

At that moment I remembered just how proud I am and how lucky I am to be a true Aussie!

The first Olympics that all nations competing have at least one female representative?

hole lot of grossly inflated ego's, millions $$$ spent on there craziness, Australia has even built a sports training center in Italy or somewhere, just so a bunch of ego's can train, now Government has given the training center away for free.

I lean towards Kizzy opinion
