Feeling pretty down at the moment' my wonderful old Golden Retriever Shane had an op for a torn cruciate ligament (knee)over a week ago all going well until a haematoma formed near the site of the surgery' its getting bigger took him back on Friday given another course of antibiotics but it hasent stopped bleeding and the swelling is getting bigger tried icing it but no help.

He has to go back to the Vet on Monday to get the staples out but have their emergency no if needed ....if it gets too big they can drain it but it wont solve the problem unless this damn bleeding stops' the dear old boy has been so brave and I do not want him to be in more pain than he has to....just want to get through this so he gets well again.blues

Oh dear Martia... so sad...

I gets that you worry so...

I am baby sitting to night, and along with the children, my son asked me to keep an eye on his old dog.. a great big huge fluffy thing that should be in the north pole ( I think that is right..) he is struggling to walk tonight... and he is 8 yrs old.. so I dunno...

anyway, I am watching him... he went for a long walk today, prolly too much for him... he has been restless for the last hour... and I am not a dog owner, so I really dont know much about it all... dancing dog

Hi Merri it looks like he has got arthritis and that causes a great amount of pain the trouble is they feel just the same as we do and its just finding out what the problem is and only a vet can tell you that.
The good thing is that if it is arthritis there are heaps of medication that can help...if nothing is done about it maybe its best to have them put to sleep as it makes their life a misery.

If a dog has Arthritis and he is an outside dog it makes it so much worse for them especially the heat in summer if they are not clipped and the cold of winter which as you know plays havoc with our poor old bones.

Oh Merri knowing you and what a kind person you are you would be a wonderful dog owner as the joy and the love they give back to you
is unsurpassed I see you with a Westie (West Highland Terrier)or maybe a Maltese Shiztu cross both of these breeds are low maintainence and a lot of fun with so much love to give.
They would love to help you in the garden as well. giggle dancing dog dancing dog dancing dog wave

Hi Martia...

This huge dog... ( gosh, he has the prettiest face) is an indoor outdoor dog... he can go whereever he likes... but I found that out at 1.30am this morning...

I am such an ijit... I went off to bed about midnight, and was lying there listening to sounds... the dogs move about and its only a smallish house... their paws (nails) make a noise on the wooden floors.. anyway, I was reluctant to actually fall asleep, because when I do, I am under, and nothing wakes me... Being I had the 2 children in my charge, I sorta dozed, and at 1.30 when my son and daughter in law came home, there was a doggie greeting - howl and whine welcome for them... anyway, then I heard all sorts of scuffling about...

doh doh

So up I got... and the dogs had done their business in the house, and the kids were trying to clean it up... I never thought to leave a door open... and no one told me that I needed to... It never occurred to me...

See, I am just useless... help uh oh doh sigh

Ya can tell I dont own animals can't ya...

May I suggest that you give your dog an over-the-counter human medication called Lyprinol (Blackmores).
Lyprinol is the oil of the New Zealand green-lipped mussel. It is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory.
It is 350 times more potent than fish oil and more potent that any of the synthetic prescription pharmaceuticals.
Other green-lipped mussel products are therapeutically useless, because the oil has oxidised. Lyprinol is the result of the only (and patented) process for the production of oil in which oxidisation is prevented. It involves stabilisation via tartaric acid, followed by extraction via liquid CO2.
Three weeks ago I spent most of the week editing the English translation of a PhD thesis by a Thai veterinarian who used Lyrinol in a trial on dogs that had advanced arthritis of the front and/or hind legs.
The results were extremely good for the dogs.
It takes about two weeks to become effective in dogs, or cats. In humans it takes about four weeks, because of our different body chemistry.
The dose used in the trial was one Lyprinol capsule per day per 10kg of dog. Chemist Warehouse usually offers the best price.
My dogs and cats think that Lyprinol is a treat and just about knock me over in the rush when I get them out of the refrigerator.

Took Shane to the vet again, poor old darling was shaking so much terrified I would leave him again,he drained the haematoma and had his staples out and he didnt have to put him out to it, he was pleased that it was old blood and it had stopped bleeding so thankfully didnt have to cauterize the vessel thank goodness.

Since his op 18 days ago he has lost nearly 2 kilo's so will keep up with his vegies he really loves the grated raw carrot mixed in so really he does not know he is on less food.

Gee I love this old gentleman ...dont know who was more upset about his op him or me,but didnt let Shane see it as he would have zoned in and played it up to the hilt.

Thank you for your support guys it means a lot.

Oh that's good news Martia, hope Shane's on the mend and feeling better really soon hug

I know what you mean about their anxiety about leaving them at the vet's, my boy gets a hopeful look in his eyes and wags his tail a little in case I might change my mind and take him home, which isn't usually the case .. but when it's a quick visit and we head back outside, it's like all his Christmases have come at once joy dancing dog joy dancing dog laugh
