Rob, I know this is a blokes area, but why have I never heard to these? I know there was a lookout for the War at Kalimna...as I have been to the site, interviewed people in Nursing homes regarding the War's impact in Gippsland...but not once have I heard of these.

Oh yes, they had trenches here, also half the stumps round the traps were blown out by grenades left over from those times.

Thank you, Rob. I find it very bizarre that this has never come up before, considering I studied Australian history many years ago in that area. Is there information on them somewhere that I could look up?

Much of our history was "Classified" and only handed down by word of mouth. My grandparents had an air-raid shelter in their place at Woolooware (near Cronulla NSW). The air-raid sirens sounded 3 times during the war and the family had to hide under the kitchen table as the air-raid shelter was full of water. The family home is now classified as Hysterical historical although the shelter is now a swimming pool.

I am not doubting that personal air raid shelters existed. I know they existed in the Mallee region in Victoria, but they are documented.

I am curious about Rob's ...if they are in my 'backyard' ...I would like to visit them.

Seems you have an interesting family history, Wash...thank you for sharing a bit of it.

as far as i know its classified and local knowledge only, not many locals round here know where they are either.
They keep a lot of things quite round this area. One the few sensible places that the c x has been knocked off the war memorials as they actually think about the fallen not some other crap, place where some things like Eagles nests, other as well are kept secrete

I don’t have a photo robplum, but we have heavy gun emplacements plus underground rail setup on rottenest island, left over from WWII, we went too the maritime museum over here in Freo, walked through an Orion class submarine tour, it was very interesting to know that during WWII Fremantle was home too over 200 submarines? That cable beach up near Broome, was named for the supply line for submarines, even in kings park overlooking the city there are still gun emplacements, although retired from service, if you think about the mining boom we are having now you would realize the importance of defending WA in WWII

Could you imagine what would have happened if the AXIS got hold of such endless recourses? But in 1941 December the Australian government setup for the defence of NSW , VIC? Instead!

It's a shame these do not become available for the public, Rob ... I would genuinely enjoy seeing them.

However, on that note... My apologies for interrupting the 'boys time' here.

Scares have occured since first settlement. La Perouse entered Botany Bay when the First Fleet arrived. And they hadn't even left the boats. We have tried to keep everyone out since. But the bloody Kiwis keep invading us.
