I don't know for sure as I don't have a TV. Something like 150 pounds, I think.

I have constant threatening letters, like once a month about not having a TV license. You're supposed to contact them to say you don't require their services, but the letters come all the same. I refuse to run up my phone bill ringing them every month because the letters come all the same. If an inspector catches me in, I invite him into my living room which contains a 1940's walnut veneered radiogram and a number of pre-war cast iron sewing machines in various states of disrepair. I just stand there and look at him blankly. That'll stop the letters for about a year.

Recently they had an inspection campaign, but didn't catch me in. I have no ariel on the roof and they will never have detected a signal from my house in all the 10 years I've lived here, but they still send their letters, still have their inspection campaigns.

If you want to know what the TV license funds...see above. rolling on the floor laughing

It would be interesting to see what the Gov would do if everyone refused to pay I mean think about it' all that money for an electrical appliance in theory they could tax all of you for a Computer ect..... grin

In theory I believe, if you watch certain things via your computer, you're still liable for the license.

I thought the idea of the license was that the BBC remains independent of outside organisations and therefore can televise material uninfluenced by private companies who would otherwise advertise with them.

I think the difference might be, you can watch what you like via your computer without having a license as long as you don't watch current BBC productions, but with a TV, even if you don't watch the BBC channels, you still have to have a license...just in case you do.

At least for the BBC you're getting a fair bit of quality broadcasting and no ad breaks. Here in Ireland, we have both advertising and Licence Fee and of course all the cushy jobs for the boys to pay for. Half the satellite channel output is ex BBC too.
