Must be a Kiwi thing. Could be something to do with their fascination with mating and sheep (don't know the difference between you & ewe).

I think when a guy calls a girl mate that is what he means she'd be a good mate to hang out with and if they are dates well I would give them a pass unless you think they are mate material
Usually if a guy is intested he will call her hun or darl or babe sweetie the list is endless

mate is not necessarily referring to a persons gender, that would probably be unlawful these days, why there is no longer blokes standing for female in bus any more, most female appear to believe male and female are in every respect equal, you should be happy with the term mate, its modern lingo for those not wearing a label "I'm a Lady" not many left

I can't picture myself in bed with someone and calling them mate. Just seems wrong on soooo many levels.

I describe a fair few male friends as "mates" and also when I forget a guys name. But there is no way I would ever be heard saying "...oh mate that feels so good..." let alone being in bed with them.
On saying that, I do have a lady friend who I would describe as a "great mate" mainly because we both feel it is a better way to describe our friendship over the many years. And oddly enough, her parents and family have described us as the same.
Although I do recall screaming in bed a couple of times last week.
"Holy crap, Batman, that bloody needle hurts" when they put in the shunt and
"What the bloody hell hit me in the face" when I woke up, and again when I looked in the mirror.

im a bloke here in my 50s now and never called a women mate sorry yes i have but thay were one of the boys and wanted it that way but now baby dear so go for it girls give it to them
well if i were to call you mate then that would mean thats what i thought of you as, if my feelings were more than that then i sure wouldnt be wanting to call you mate as that would be putting you into the 'friends' catagory and would be excluding you from ever being a 'lover'
