Being single presents a challenge when wanting to travel. Who's been on a solo holiday? Would love to hear where you went and how it was. What were the good things e.g. doing exactly as you please, or the challenges e.g. dining solo?

Back - Packed round the world three times on my own, met sort of family of Back Packers that were doing same, most heading same direction that you often re-met by chance in other countries.
Girls usually traveled with a partner or teamed up with someone rather than travelling alone

When you no longer feel you have a country or home it was a good option

I usually just trek off to wherever I wanna go, in Australia that is.

Dining alone doesn't bother me, and I do like to get up early and get out and about, rather than waiting hours for someone while they sleep in and dawdle over a shower, breakfast etc.

When it comes to overseas trips, I tend to hook up with a tour group - you fly to wherever the destination is then meet up with the group at a designated hotel for a pre-tour briefing by the guide.

It's still fairly independent, but safe for a single woman thumbs up

My first cruise (1974) was on my own and I met some great people and really enjoyed it. So great when you are young and can enjoy yourself.

But always travelled with someone since. Found it good to share the experiences with someone.

On saying that, my mother went on a coach tour through Central Australia after my father passed away on her own and that is where she met a single man. They were married for more than 20 years.

There are "singles" travel sites around if you are keen for a holiday and have no one who can go with you. Many people are in the same situation, just that many of us don't take up the opportunities.

The 'single room surcharge' can also be a challenge to your budget Lilee??? So it might help to find someone you can twin share with?
That's where singles travelling together comes in handy?? hug

Thanks for the tip Newlife, I'm heading off on my first solo trip to Tassie for a week soon. I'm meeting up with my brother and his partner for a few days but the rest of the time will be driving and sight seeing. I'm very excited as I have always wanted to go there. If it all goes well I will be definately planning more trips in the future. No use letting being single stop me from doing what you want. I would be a bit more concerned going overseas alone but can't see a problem traveling in Oz. Can't wait yay

Newlife08: Sounds absoloutely brilliant Rob! Hope you had a good camera with you and got some good shots??

I am a Saggittarian (but can't spell it, that doesn't look right??) which is the sign of the traveller. Have been a bit tied down lately with family committments but before that I covered a few miles but nothing like that. Jeeeeeeeealous

i'm a Sagittarius, no camera, no almost money any camera i had got sold...but that didn't matter, in, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangkok or throughout India cost something like $1.50 for bed and breakfast in those days

All else fails, rent a car or camper, hitch hiking in Aus can be just as dangerous as other countries, places like St Helens or other like visitor destinations, are pretty well set up, however getting about without having transport would be limiting, car be better than busing somewhere then not being able to get out and about

I am hiring a car robplum......I'm a bit long in the tooth to be hitchhiking....peace Don't think I'd get a lift moping

I did hitchhike up the east coast from Newcastle to Cairns with a girlfriend way back in 1985.... had a great time and no trouble. I wouldn't do it these days though....not since Ivan Milatt. blues

There are free camp sites dotted around Tassie (think you get a permit) just visit there motor rego people in any main town, and ask about those cause most of them are in really good top spots.
Table Mountain and places like that are really expensive tourist traps, whereas Mole Creek and Sheffield be more affordable jump off places to stay
two ladies in 2nd to 5th photos in this album chucked there packs in back my ute and we spent four five days wandering up west coast of Tassie together, then came from Salviena, nice ladies and good company

I would not go if I had to go alone... I dont mind travelling on a plane to somewhere, but I need to know that someone on the other end is waiting...

Probably the biggest difference between male and female. There is that safety net to consider. Merri, probably the most sanest thing you did in your life hiring a minder in a strange palce.

Us blokes seem to be left alone a bit in most places.

And there is a big difference between travelling single and travelling alone.

I have travelled in some very remote areas in Australia with 1 or more mates. Never had any fears other than a dingo or 2 around or maybe something crawling into my swag while I sleep soundly.laugh rolling on the floor laughing

About 4 years ago, I did a 4 week trip with a lady friend. Oddly enough, it was in some places where she was fearful that I was also fearful. And more often or not, I did know there nothing to worry about. Whether in a campground, caravan park or the middle of nowhere.

We stayed in a hotel with a lock on the door and she was more afraid than when we stayed in the middle of nowhere.

It is all a perception of how comfortable you feel on your travels.
