I was married for 35 years and we travelled all oiver Australia, South Africa, England and Scotland. I am now forced to gert used of the idea of travelling on my own.
My most memorable trip was an attempt to cross the Simpson Desert from Mt Dare to Birdsville about 600 km of desert tracks. About half way blew a clutch and had to call emergency services to tow me back to Mt Dare.

I do admire you people who have travelled overseas. You must have some fabulous memories. Hopefully on day I can get to see more of the world. What a great idea to hire a minder and travel guide applause

I agree, overseas and even some places in Australia may be too dangerous to travel alone when your a female. I would like to think Australia is pretty safe in the day time and most people would look out for you. I wouldn't like to go roaming around in the middle of the night by myself in some places.

It would be much more enjoyable to have a travel companion as long as you get on well and don't mind sharing the itinery and going to see what each other wants to see. I am wondering what it will be like to have a meal in public alone. I havn't done that many times before, whether I will feel self consciencious or not?

Australia is a great country and I don't want to miss out just cause I'm single. In fact it's because I now only have myself to worry about that i want to have someting to do and like the idea of discovering new places i haven't seen before.

Sounds like many of you have seen some great places. Keep sharing your holiday memories.

LiLee: Being single presents a challenge when wanting to travel. Who's been on a solo holiday? Would love to hear where you went and how it was. What were the good things e.g. doing exactly as you please, or the challenges e.g. dining solo?

Just got back from Florida 16000 mile return trip....went to meet the love of my life but she didn't like me crying .she did say I was a nice man though frustrated Anyway you will love Tassie and when dinning on your own hold your head high and try not to look lonely. Hope that works for you I usually look like a moping blues hmmm looser yeah that's it. But as long as you are having fun on your own is cool, but with someone else is hot devil

Lilee have you tried ?? I don't know if there would be a group in Lismore but there are groups all around Oz - you might find a solo travellers group where you travel single but in a group - if that makes sense?? confused

Getting to be dangerous but I have been thinking. I do recall some time ago listening to an interview with a guy who had set up an internet "car-pooling" site.

And yeah, it only works when people live on the same route or close by and have a similar destination. Great for those that head into the City but not so good when you could be anywhere around the place.

It worked very well in Sydney for those that lived on the North Shore (describing a big reference area, not a particular place) where most of those people worked in either Sydney City or North Sydney (and could have caught the train like the plebs).

But failed those who lived in the western or south-western suburbs because most of those did not have City office jobs. End result is single driver vehicles on the road going to many widespread non-City jobs.

This mob, based in Melbourne, is a bit different. It looked at trying to link up like-need people via an internet page. It could be going to work, kids to school, whatever.

What caught me was when they said they had a lady listed who was travelling to Darwin from Melbourne and was looking for someone to share expenses. Then I listened a bit more and realised that there are probably so many people wanting to do stuff like this, and not able to find their way to doing it besides an ad in the paper and getting weirdo replies.

They do have a vetting system initially, but it is up to the people to decide on who they travel with. But I do not remember who they are, probably forgot as I usually have travel companions for my trips, usually to remote areas. Might be worth searching, and what I have said may help giving you the search criteria to find this mob.

A lot of travel agents are looking for 'single/not with a companion/want to share' stuff going. And often there are 3 people together who want a 4th to share. Might be worth asking around and get on there offers.
