justlooking37: WHY?
Even though its said to be an art. In fact its a hobby or craft.
The art of model making encompasses a wide variety of materials, techniques, and end results. Most people equate model making with plastic model cars and airplanes or scale models of satellites and miniature sets used in filmmaking. But model makers blend a unique combination of art and science into their work of replicating, creating mockups, volume studies, and scale reproductions of anything from a building to an automobile. Just about any product you use, whether it is an athletic shoe or a cell phone, was very likely represented by a scale model sometime during its development life cycle. Doubt if you will find anything on here relating to such things.

Yours was a response I rather expected and as you more or less imply, the general public can no longer make the distinction betweem crafts, model making and model engineering.
Since the advent of the computergame they have all been deliberately clouded, ridiculed by the ill-educated who cannot even speak or write proper english and dumbed down by the media and various presentations seen such activities as eccentric by patronising TV presenters.
jac379: That would all come under arts, wouldn't it?
Hi Jac I don't think so - From what I have been told the general public today think *Art* is confined to Pictures and/or possibly -- Emin's unmade bed Cheers

Good morning Sir,
Unfortunately the changing times leaves a lot to be desired. Not many have the skills, the dedication to construct anything like models. It is a precision project and takes time and patience. I could not immagine that there are many that could complete a model let alone a real aircraft. Thankfully there are the few that have the acumen and the brain to actually build and fly their own aircraft. Those who build and make have a sense of achievement and pride.

Mornin Ma'am Woops - I Pressed the tit too early on the other message
I agree with you basically. But I don't think anyone should dismiss the many lesser mortals who are competent craft enthusisats/model makers & model engineers BUT, due to the very high costs involved, lack of workshop space or machinery, can neither afford to build a full size Car (Special or kit built) an Aircraft or Egg whisk, let alone get a PPL enabling them to fly the latter two.
IMHO Other mortals who do Crafts for a hobby and/or make excellent scale model projects etc from even plastic kits looked down upon by the uneducated, have to cut their clothes according to cloth and watch bank balances. BUT - That IMHO as a skilled tradesman of over 50 years hand on and with trade teaching experience does not make what they do inferior.
One particular skilled Craft that always fascinates me is Ornamental turning on the Holtzaffel lathe. It is IMO a truly amazing education to watch wooden creations being made at demo's by those who understand it and always gets my admiration.

100% agree with you. Myself creating my own business from making and inventing new items. The high cost of materials is one major factor this in itself kills any ideas that the more acute minds have. Indeed the uneducated have the small minds of thinking that making such things are a waste of time and effort. I am not one to look down upon anyone. If less time was spent on iphones, computers, computer games, but spent on using their brains to create then I am positive that we would see some brilliance. While I manage on a table that folds for my work I am pretty sure that for building or woodwork adapting and overcoming is the key. The ebay is there for motors etc., that we find can be adapted for models and indeed small aircraft. It does save the pennies to spend on areas that must be certified. I simple adore ornamental wood creations we do have some in our home. Those people are blessed with a steady hand.

Do you have to go along with what the general public thinks?
Why can't you make your own interpretation of a thread category and use it how you wish?

Good Point - I tried exactly what you suggest when I was on CS previously.
What I posted received some intelligent comments from other model makers and we were interacticting happily - BUT - a few hi-jackers decided to deliberately destroy it.
That was why I posted this specific thread asking about three aspects of hobbies/interests, about which I am happy to share my knowledge with intelligent like minded and anyone with some empathy.

So, is this thread about there being no international category for crafts and model making, or about crafts and model making? Only from your title and OP, it looks like the former to me.
How do a few hijackers destroy a thread? Most threads have a bit of hijacking/off topic/banter/side topics - but related stuff on them. That's part of the beauty of them. People get to explore all avenues of a debate and get to socialise as well (which surely is largely the point of a social site).
Isn't part of it how you manage your thread? I'm not trying to have a pop at you here, JS. I'm trying to explore the issue of using the tools available to good effect and how we may do that.

Your points are perfectly valid if everyone respects the rules of conduct. It matters not whether it is International or just UK, the catagories are the same as they exsit and I have no wish to repeat the same experience so that was why I asked the question.
In the opinion of the few that were happy with the discussion, the hijacking was personal and went too far with offesnive comments against DIY / model making / model engineering advice to be managed by the O/P. A neutral non commercial advice website was objected to by the mods after one of the trolls shopped it and the thread to them so we went silent and continued in private.
Godsgift: I can make a box of matches out of a model of Westminster Abbey.
Good one GG BUT - IMO - Not as original or effective as a Radio Controlled 1/4 scale 747 with a Nuclear bomb aboard crashed on The Houses of Parliament when Shamoron's doing PM's questions. Cheers from the Cynical & Criminally insane JL
