I just read that Peter Slipper had a $450,000 legal bill, which he hoped to pay through the sale an investment property.
Given that Slipper is a lawyer, sort of makes one wonder why he did not do more of the job himself.
While there is the old legal saying, that 'the lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client', there is also the economic reality that it is ruinously expensive for anyone who is less than a billionaire to engage legal counsel.

I expect he thought that We the Taxpayer would pay for it as usual because when Nicola Roxon paid Ashby out thats when he sacked his Lawyers as he realised that he was responsible for all his own costs....about time too. sigh

One of the big problems with employment is that we expect our 'company' to defend us, no matter what. Or our unions to defend our rights when we try to do the right thing.

State Rail NSW had 2 employees regularly sending memos up the line to their Manager about the possibilty of landslip occuring on NSW South Coast with serious consequences and works needed to be done. When it happened, State Rail immediately sacked them following the investigation and Coroner's report that said that nothing had been done to prevent it happening, resulting in the loss of life.

The Union would not represent them because they were no longer employees. Result was that they had to sell their family homes to defend themselves, and then spent a number of years in gaol for 'manslaughter" because "they had not done enough to expose the problem."

And the biggest problem with our parliament is that they believe that being an elected member gives them so much protection from whatever they say or do. About time that they are made accountable for thier actions.

Whitlam brought in so many good reforms during his very short time as PM 40 years ago. He introduced Murphy's Law (under Sir Lionel Murphy), the Family Law Act and the establishment of the Child Support Agency (CSA). Also well known as the Collection Suicide Agency. These Acts did benefit the likes of my grandmother (actually a big No because it was too late for her but did benefit a lot of people in similar circimstances). But there should have been changes over the years.

Hawke said "no child shall live in poverty" but so many fathers had to do this to deliver his promise. And a fair few mothers where the fathers bucked the system.

Many polies get in there to do their term and collect their super without realising what they are really doing to our society. Watched Landline today and they had a bit about the May 2011 decision to ban live export to Indonesia. One of the slaughter houses was featured. Okay, they were doing what they 'knew as what should be done" and not realising the impact of far removed people in Australia. They have changed their practises and they feel that it is now a better way of dealing with the animals. And for them as well.

They now have acknowledge this because someone has finally told them of a better way instead of the age-old custom they have only known. they hac=ve said that they now know there is a better way.

The real impact of the Aust ban for that short time has meant that they have lost 1/3rd of their breeding stock and have been so reliant on the "anti-Muslim Aussies." This has so impacted on our primary production where many cattle producers are in dire financial straights. Only the biggest producers with other incomes are above the poverty line.

The cattle industry is now going through the legal system to get compensation for the evrry-so-quick decisions of the media hype without looking to the consequnces of their action.

But it is we taxpayers who will foot the bill and not the polies who make rash decisons.
