This is a regional thread I guess, but it is something I feel strongly about.

In a nutshell, an area known as "The Spit" here on the Gold Coast is a beautiful, natural spot to get away from the highrises and hotels that we all love so much. Used by so many people, swimmers, snorkelling, surfers, fishermen, boaties, kids to oldies. thumbs up

It is under threat at the moment (again) by the local newly elected council and in particular the Mayor Tom Tate. His plan is to concrete over this area - build a 'Cruise Ship Terminal" together with associated hotels and ..... a Casino!! devil

Went to a rally today organised by SOS -

Biggest rally ever on GC - 3,000. Great day. If you have time check out this video - made independently by some folk from local Griffith Univ. wave

It will be an absoloute criminal act to destroy this spectacular marine environment.

I agree with you,it is a great spot, and would be a shame to build on it.

The world of concrete,

My son and I were listening to a song the other day, about. You don't know what you've got till its gone, they paved paradise and put up a parking lot,now they put all the trees in a tree museum and charge the people a dollar and a half just to see them.

And he said what do they mean by trees in a museum..

It seems that the world is coming to that.spoiling all the great spots for the up coming generations.

that is a great song and so true.....why is bigger always better, when is enough enough?a similar thing happened here, the mayor at the time had shares in an appartment building across the river from the town campground, all of a sudden the campground was to be shut down, lots of people protested this and a 'save the campground' commitee was formed and they marched to the council to protest, the short version is that the campground was shut, the appartments were built and then the company that built them went into receivership, another song comes to mind 'money money money its a rich mans world' oh and dont trees create oxygen which we breathe? i guess that once they cut down all the trees the rich man will be able to sell us oxygen and thus make even more moneyuh oh frustrated

I do not wish to offend you too much dear lady, but you have no idea what you are talking about.
I love it when the lefties and greenies begin to waffle on about the Southport Spit. They have no freaking idea.
The Southport Spit was built during the 1960s by Keith Williams with the use of a sand dredge. The entire thing is an artifical construction. rolling on the floor laughing
It is no more natural and precious than a landfill.
I suggest that you look up the history of the Southport Spit before you go lying down in the path of bulldozers. rolling on the floor laughing

this sort oif thing is happening in every state at the moment, where i live in the central highlands, the loggers are logging the only habitat left where the tiny leadbeaters possum lives, there are reputed to be only 500 left in the wild, not only that, some of the largest trees in australia are here and rare ones and they chop them down.

The origins of The Spit date back to the years 1897 - 1898 when a series of gales and high seas finally broke through a narrow stretch of land called Jumpinpin on Stradbroke Island.

The breakthrough created a new sea passage into Moreton Bay. Stradbroke Island was divided in two (North & South), changing the ebb and flow of tides through the southern reaches of Moreton Bay.

The impact on Southport's environment was remarkable. Southport's rocky foreshore had previously been exposed to open seas.

After the breakthrough, tidal action eroded sand from the southern tip of South Stradbroke resulting eventually in the surveyed township site of Moondarewa disappearing entirely by the 1940s.

Meanwhile, a low sand spit developed to the north of Main Beach Point and this permanent sand isthmus continued to edge across the mouth of the Nerang River until the construction of the Gold Coast Seaway in 1987.

As The Spit, developed into a permanent landform, there was a demand for private leasehold title of land and applications for dredging rights for mineral sands there.

Great minds...................banana applause cheering

But Carl is partly right, they did do some work on it to RESTORE it.

Maybe Carl should be campaigning against putting the sand back on Surfers Paradise beaches after the storms.professor tongue

You do not offend me Carl by taking an opposing view - but you do offend me with your condescending attitude thumbs down

I used 'natural' as a way to describe the area in that there is an abundance of marine life, there are no highrises, apartments, hotels, shops, cafes, poker machine palaces.
tongue

Have you ever been there? It is a wonderful place to be especially on the weekends, right on the edge of the built up resort of Surfers, but yet you feel you could be a million miles away.

Anyone who loves being in and around the water is there, kids doing what the health professionals are telling them to do - off their backsides and away from computer screens and OUTDOORS!! And not a McDonalds or KFC in site?

I don't really give a damn about the history of the place - it is now Public Land and Tom Tate and the STate Govt is giving it for free!! Yes, giving it away to any developer who is kind enough to invest in some fantasy project doh

If lefties and greenies consist of surfers, boaties, lawyers, doctors, engineers, marine scientists, people who care about the beauty of the marine park and the social and economic benefits of this place then OK everybody at the NO Cruise Ship Terminal rally are lefties and greenies if that makes you feel any better Carl.

The beaches north of the Tweed River would not have a problem if the Tweed breakwater was removed. It stops the natural migration of sand.
Re the Southport Spit: I stand by what I wrote. Keith Williams used a sand dredge to create it. Some of it may have already been there, but what we know as the Southport Spit today is an artificial creation.

I am actually fairly close (just west of Beenleigh) and when I worked at Molendinar for nine years I went jogging on the Southport Spit almost every day after work.
These days it provides a wonderful urban habitat for brown snakes, the presence of which make the path along the Spit somewhat more interesting.
Even if the Spit was natural, look at it.
There is the Sheraton, Marina Mirage, Sea World, the Nara Hotel/Resort, a few trees and then a massive parking lot on the edge of which is the coast guard tower and the ripoff kiosk.
Environmental significance? Please. rolling on the floor laughing
