Not being overly concerned with NZ politics and who has done what and when, there does seem to be some issues everywhere when there is a change from a long standing party to a newer one running the country, especially with a minority government. As we have seen here in Aust.

Seems that pollies make all sort of promises to get in, and when they finally do they are not sure what impact it will have because it has not been properly thought out. But go ahead anyway as the people will vote them out next time if it doesn't work and somebody else can clean up the mess.

The all-time classic Aussie example is Murphy's Law introduced during Whitlam's brief stay. Commonly called the Family Law Act. Whilst the reasoning behind it was a very sound, it has not really been revised after 40 years when the impact has been devastating on so many people.

A review of the Act was undertaken when the Hawke Govt came to power and the Committee said that there where 110 immediate changes required. Hawke managed 2 and Howard managed 10. And these were "immediate" changes.

Parliaments are extremely quick to introduce new legislation but are very, very slow to change it.

However things go for National, they are almost certain to get another term in office purely because there's no credible alternative
