I passed five vehicles in the country (before reaching the highway) and every single vehicle driver waved as we passed. I got to town, and everyone I passed and smiled at as I said hello smiled and said hello back. In the grocery store I saw a quarter on the floor (and I can most certainly use those!), but just as I bent down and scooped it up, I noticed a little boy with his mom who had also seen it. With out even so much as a second thought I handed it to him, and was greeted with a thank you! What really blew me away was that he immediately ran off and put it in one of those charity setups where you get to watch the coin spiral down into the hole for several moments. Yes, it was starting to become a "warm and fuzzy" kind of day!
I then headed off to purchase a mouse and continued to "bat a 1000" when it came to the smiles and hellos. I entered the store and saw a great-looking mouse for $45. The clerk, in almost a whisper, told me that there had been a few complaints about that particular mouse and that a far less expensive one would be a better buy! He could have made a bigger sale, but instead, clued me in, and allowed me to save over $15!
I left the store and was just about to head home when I bumped into an old high-school chum whom I haven't seen in thirty years! Although we were both a bit rushed, we decided to go for coffee. I truly was starting to consider this a 100% day. It was at that point I noticed a very elderly couple sitting the table next to us sharing a pot of tea and an order of toast. I looked over at my chum and told him I really did have to go, and that because today had been such a great day, I was going to pick up the couple's tab without telling them - a bit of payback for a wonderful day! We exchanged phone numbers, I picked up his the bill for the coffee and paid for it and the couple's tea and toast. The gal at the till winked and said that was a very sweet thing to do! I walked out of the cafe with a smile on my face and getting back into my car, headed home.
A few minutes later I received a phone call from my chum. He informed me that when the couple got up to leave, so did he. He wanted to see their reaction to having their order paid for. He then told me, that as he stood by them in line, the same person at the till (she had been visible to us), without batting an eye, proceeded to charge the couple. Had my friend not been there, she would have been able to simply pocket the money. He quickly intervened and "corrected" the situation. He said that the couple thanked, him, and told him to pass their thanks on to me. He didn't make a huge deal of the matter, but he certainly did convey his dismay to the embarrased person behind the till.
I know that "times" are hard, and yes, the girl at the till may have had her "reasons" for doing what she did, but I have to admit, that I did feel a bit disappointed. It had been "almost a 100% day".
Would I do it again having had this happen? Sure, why not? It could easily be a 100% day next time!
