crunches? (8)

Nov 19, 2012 12:10 PM CST crunches?
I'm trying to drop some flab but want to build some muscle - started doing some short range crunches with a kettlebell - about 200 5 times a week. Then walk/jog (alternate 1k of each) 5k most days using one of those ab belts (was given it to try) that force your abs to contract. Plus a couple hours of swimming each week.
Someone has told me that doing so much on my abs wont actually build any muscle but atrophy them ...
Are they right?

everyone has abs! Even without working out. You can't make 'muscly' abs. You can only lose weight, then tone up the stomach so that the abs show themselves. Best way to lose weight. Running and good diet. Keep doing your kettleball crunches, they will help tone up the stomach area. But they won't help you lose weight.

I've already spent the last few months on my diet and it's fairly clean more than 80% of the time. Just have never done any weights as such (tried a couple years ago and banjaxed my shoulder within 2 weeks for about 6 months)
