I assume you haven't seen "Lifeboat"? to replace it with Snow White. Bear in mind that this is my personal list and not a list from IMDB so it reflects my taste, no doubt it wouldn't exactly match anybody elses.
I've seen "Potempkin" but felt it was over rated but that may be because I feel the silent era was more or less a precursor to the modern movie genre. We live in a world of sound afterall. Having said that I will say that there are 4 silent films that appear on my master list of about 300 films. ORPHANS OF THE STORM with the Gish sisters and THE SCARLET LETTER with Lillian Gish, also THE GENERAL with Buster Keaton.
A lot of the movies on my list are virtually non existant anymore due to loss or damage of the few remaining copies.

Dagosto: Thanks Ooby, we're doing well as a "we," although GACryptic has just endured serious knee surgery, as you may have read elsewhere.

Personal taste always plays a role in discussion of "best" films. I was trying to balance that with the film's lasting influence and significance. Disney's Snow White is not among my own favorites, but there's little denying it created the genre of feature-length animation films.

You're right, I have still not seen Lifeboat, and I do think a list of "24 Best" ought to have Hitchcock in there somewhere. But, I targeted Lifeboat for replacement because you already had Steinbeck with The Grapes of Wrath, which gave you Henry Fonda too.

I do think your list is a real good one, as I said originally; all acknowledged classics. But with a strict limit of 24 titles, we'd have to make some hard choices. I did restrict my suggestions to films only in my own DVD collection, not some IMDb list. I suspect, for instance, that Chaplin's The Gold Rush would have been a better suggestion than Modern Times, but I haven't seen it yet. Likewise, when it comes to westerns, critical consensus is pinned on John Huston's The Searchers, with John Wayne. But I don't have that one yet either.

I'd love to debate the relative merits of each title further with you if you wish. But I don't wanna bore you or the forum-browsing public. Feel free to email if you like; you've a subject here that I'm quite keen on.

Dagosto: Why thank you Ooby. Me neither, apparently. So, here's my list of the 24 Best Movies Ever Made. All are in my current DVD collection; no "worshipping from afar" here.

It was awful tough to whittle it down to 24. I got stuck at 27 and had to make some painful choices.

14. The Gods Must Be Crazy Have you seen pt II even better than 1st one
15. The Graduate
16. Harvey Never saw
17. The Last Walt Never saw
18. Monty Python And The Holy Grail

Honorable Mention: The boxed set of Harold Lloyd.

Not included, on purpose: Citizen Cane and The Godfather. The former I find just so overrated; the latter, a fine film, but not among my top 24.

This'd be a lot easier, Ooby, if we could choose maybe 8 or 10 for each genre?
