I've been somewhat troubled by the words of foreigner who i met online. She is spanish and she has been living in Australia on and off for 5 or 6 years.
A couple of things she said on a date with me about Aussies made me really stop and think about our reputation over seas.

1. We don't mean what we say.
And because of this fact (?)
2. We are more British than we realise.

Old English saying here, we forgive our enemies so we don’t have to like our friends!
I think she needs to meet more Aussies! But then again living here in paradise, maybe the true Aussies are just over here in the west! Were everyone gets a fair-go still,

What exactly does she mean by "Aussies don't mean what they say"??
Does she mean that Aussies tell lies? Or we say things we don't mean to say?
And as for being more British than we realise, if the aussies were anything like the Brits I wouldn't have stayed here.

no matter what nationality there will always be people who dont mean what they say, doesnt matter what race creed religon, they are across the broad expanse of society.
and it sounds like she has more than just a few hang ups if she reckons just coz of her perception that we are more British!
With the people who set up the constitution of this country (as well as a lot of other countries across the world) you would expect some british habits and mannerisms to be in our culture.
I suppose it would be a bit like saying to her that as Spaniards they are like Porteguese? To each their own

Common misconception that as we speak English (as against American), we must be British.
But we Aussies have a very wide heritage and it does become complicated. There are many Dutch people here and so we do at times seem to talk in Double-Dutch.
And English as such has its origins in Friesland (part of Holland) but were also conquered by Angles, Saxons, Danes, Normans (people from the north who conquered a large part of the now France and later a lot more of Europe) and they themselves conquered a few other lands over the years.
When I was born in Australia with grandparents born here as well, I was considered to be "British." So a lot of the "old country" ways may still apply.
the pope found Mary MacKillop at least she spent her life benefiting others. Otherwise i don't think they'll come with one
One the most honest even though a POM i think was Alan Bond, yeah Alan Bond who the Australian Government attacked and compromised his ability to do what he had set up, i don't blame him and the same occurred with Scass, both casualty of cheating Keating's aussie $ float, parroting regans new world order, yeah deregulation what a load of dishonest crap. Market forces to govern prices, show me any area government isn't fiddling the books in

Araphao, I think you have issues that can't be solved by anyone on this forum, but hey good luck to you. It's YOUR life, you make the choices, get on with it, this is not a dress rehearsal this is IT.
I think most people on here have had some kind of relationship experience, whether it is he left me, she left me, he/she cheated on me, widows/widowers, we could all wear a sack cloth but there comes a point when you just have to pick youself up dust yourself off, and say I am moving on?
Merriweather: For goodness sake, how do you think we all survived... same as yourself... got ribbed for being different when I was young.. lots of slurs all the time.. but Jeez, who cares...
I came here as a small child in 1954, and because my family spoke another language, and ate different foods, and so forth, I copped it bad.. Get over it...
First it was the wogs, spicks and every other charming name, Then it was a worry about communists... which included everyone not ozzie born. Then it was the pommies then it was the slopes ( inthe 80's)the vietnamese
Then it was now... the muslims..
Oh for Gods sake..
Will this stupidity ever end...
as i said it don't matter anymore and been over it a long time, and yes i agree with everything you say, and now its the so called refugees,, funny i agree with them, sorry its my nose,,maybe i should pick it more often,
arapaho: gets up my nose when women do it thats all, also because i think being born in england has been a huge factor in how hard its been to find anyone in my younger days,,have seen it first hand met one woman online and talked to her on the phone and she told me she could smell me over the phone and hung up,,pure nasty no fun in that, my sister has had no trouble,,funny that, might be because she was attractive and had breasts my brother was hounded at school by a teacher until mum went down and threatened to box his ears,,yet the same teacher never said a word to me, maybe because he knew i had a fight a couple of nasties its all fun till it hurts, wish i was black,, it don't matter anymore,,
Being half Polish i bloody know what you mean Mr A "But" take a look at how they (women) treat poles in the UK. And dont you reckon we would smell to them after being used as well I think this happens to poles all over the world mate so don't let it get you down

Newlife08: Thanks Merri, I noticed that an apology was not forthcoming, if I have to ask for an apology then it is probably not sincere. It doesn't worry me just makes me feel sad that someone can have such a huge chip on his shoulder?
And I hate the C word - don't tolerate bad language in 'real' life, but here is different, someone who doesn't know me doesn't bother me.
Have a lovely WHITE RIBBON DAY everyone, as good a day as any for us ALL to think about how we speak, act, treat each other??

Arapaho, Awful word! and so unwarranted....and was surprised after reading your profile... how opposite a picture you paint for us women about yourself...I think someone is misrepresenting.. ..... I'm sorry you had tough times but you're not Robinson Crusoe! Maybe stop pointing the finger at everyone else and take a good hard look in the mirror! Hoping you just had a bad day that day cause I agree...no excuse for speaking that way!
