They are permitted here if they fit the Australian Design Rules.
My great-grandfather came 3rd on a motorbike in a Sydney-Melbourne road race in the very early 1900s, beaten by 2 cars. Mum had the 3rd Place medal and all the documents but her place got burgled and that was one of the items stolen.
