OK, we have all sorts on here. Christians (with all their flavours), Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Pagans, Wiccans, Atheists, Agnostics, those who believe in God, those who don't believe in God and one or two who think they are God.

Now I would be fairly certain that 90% of people who believe, would passionately argue that their way is the one true way of salvation and do so because they were raised in that religion and were spoon fed the principles of that religion.

So my feeling is that 'faith' would appear to be accident of birth rather than any deeply held philosophy. Should we not question these beliefs and put them to the test before claiming that they have found the true way? Should we not examine other faiths before making a decision? Or is it a case that if it appears to be working for me, don't fix it?

I'm curious to know if any religious people have ever tried to live without it? conversing

You can believe anything you wish, Godsgift. You can believe in fairies, Santa or God. How relative they are in your life, that is entirely up to you.

Although the Philosophy you speak of is well covered in Richard Dawkin's "The God Delusion".

I am in complete agreement. I came up with an interesting argument when I was a teenager that went a little something like this:
"Wouldn't your god appreciate faith that's been proven unshakable? I mean, wouldn't it mean more to him/her/it if you found that there was no other faith out there that made sense aside from this one? Why not use your mind and question things? See if this path is REALLY right for you?"
I've just always thought that in order to call oneself faithful, you had to have been through tests to know that you are.

Isn't belief in science an accident of birth?

Two centuries from now science will regard much of today's science as hocus pocus - For instance social conditioning is a 'science' but if neuroscience and psychology has taught us anything over the last 20 years then we'd be far better off examining how the environment impacts upon pre-existing behaviour-causing genetics.

However, the politics of the old generation and their establishment form a cult around social conditioning which is completely unscientific. The word of the Liberal-'Atheist' establishment is taken as gospel by many because the findings of modern science are diametrically opposed to many of the Liberal beliefs that people(many apparently Atheist)feel emotionally(not rationally)inclined to believed in.

Thank you. I shall leave the site immediately. I wouldn't have asked the question, had I known that Richard Dawkins was the new Messiah and had answered it on behalf of the whole human race including the small sub set that calls itself, 'Connecting Singles?'

Had I just become lazy or perhaps I had taken leave of my senses when I didn't think to use Google or Wikipedia rather than ask the falable human beings on here for their opinions.

Please accept my humblest apologies. (I probably should have never questioned the religion of my upbringing in the first place. I have no right to an opinion.)

religion and GOD are two different things.there are many different religions but there is only one GOD.the main point is do you believe there is a GOD who is LORD and saviour of all mankind.do you know GOD. can you believe in something you don't know.I was raised catholic it was ok but later in live was not that happy with what they were teaching and turned to the bible. it really does tell you what is going on in this world and what the future holds.btw the future does not look good.

The most advanced sciences such as neuroscience assert that, for instance, your race will effect how you behave in any given environment.

Now obviously this doesn't suit the colour-blind ethics & politics of today. However, this means our establishment is essentially religious, and that the quacks who believe in the ethics of the establishment have absolutely NO place attempting to denigrate or attack any other religion.

Of course they're different.

All irrational beliefs held for emotional and moral purposes I would define as religiousness.

No need to believe in God to believe in fantasy... But, I don't mean to insult you as a Christian, I actually regard the Christian design for life to be vastly superior to that of the modern day.

At this point in my life I do believe in something that is spiritually tangible. Years ago, in my attempts to live as a beatnik (cabin in forest, wood stove, oil lamps, home made crafts and folk music, etc...) I decided to "not believe", as I had many questions, and so on. It was not possible. I knew there was something powerful and spiritual. Here is the analysis that settled: Your path (any other's) and my path may be, and probably are, vastly different in terms of what a spiritual environment is, or could be. This does not invalidate either path: they are both true for the individual, as are other paths for other individuals. Of course there are basic truths that entertwine all paths, such as not lying, stealing, damaging other people and their lives. Does this explain to you how I see "Truth"?

Not just interesting but the only way to find the Truth :))

In fact, our whole reality should come under close scrutiny....we should over and over again keep gathering all relevant information in order to effectively learn about ourselves, our environment and our future :))

Peace be with you :)
