Would like to ask you australians what you know of this man.
I understand he was a premier not sure what part of australia. But also had policies addressing indigenous rights in northern territory etc.Did he crackdown on organised crime groups and disaapeared apparently in tragic diving accident.Heard some bizzarre theories of why he dissapeared.

um Harold Holt was Prime Minisiter of Australia when he drowned on Cheviot Beach near Portsea Victoria in 1967

wiki page

although he was an experienced swimmer he never came back from a morning swim.

Cheviot Beach has a strong undertow and lots rocks from memory. The day I was there the was a strong onshore breeze and the waves were breaking everywhere, not a place for the faint hearted

Conspiracy's were everything from he defected (swam out to a sub) to taken by the Japanese. His body was never discovered so the stories have never disappeared

" everything from he defected (swam out to a sub) to taken by the Japanese"!

try conspiracy 1 (a) some thought they liked him so much he was snatched by the Americans

Today, Holt is mainly remembered for his somewhat controversial role in expanding Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War, for his famous "All the way with LBJ" quote, and for the sensational circumstances of his death. In the opinion of his biographer Tom Frame, these have tended to obscure the many achievements of Holt's long and distinguished political career.
As Minister for Immigration (1949–1956), Holt was responsible for the relaxation of the White Australia policy and as Treasurer under Menzies he initiated major fiscal reforms including the establishment of the Reserve Bank of Australia and launched and guided the process to convert Australia to decimal currency. As Prime Minister, he oversaw landmark changes including the historic decision not to devalue the Australian dollar in line with the British pound, and the 1967 constitutional referendum in which an overwhelming majority of Australians voted in favour of giving the Commonwealth power to legislate specifically for indigenous Australians.

Hi Rob, my onfo came from a actual tour by a local historian of the
Portsea region many years ago. Even on wiki him swimming out to a sub is mentioned but it was to the Chinese.

He was a man of national importance and the amount of stories that abound even now many years after is incredible. He was an interesting and his death will always be an unsolved mystery.

From suicide, to being taken by sharks, subs, Americans and many others the actual truth of the death disappeared with his body.

Benidorm have fun researching his history, he was an interesting character

wash2u: Sorry, Beni, but "coming to Australia to work" has been a common theme over the last 40 years. And why not when wages are double NZ, even the dole.

Many years ago, us Aussies could just hop across the Tasman and work away, even when the money was low compared to here. But expenses were higher.

Now we need to have a PASSPORT just to visit. We are 'welcome' but.......spend your money here but go back home.
en zeders can't get the Aussie dole any more , good thing work or go hungry when the shutters went up on free travel it could be in response to NZ's open door policy to any body who wanted to come here , and come they did .

NZ used to be an easy way of getting to Australia. "Live there for 12 months and Aust will welcome you with open arms." Trouble is that too many people were rorting the system and we have sooo many "boat people" jumping ahead of the legitimate emigrants, we have to put a stop somewhere.
