JeanKimberley: The US version of the Smithsonian January edition has an article on the fight between Geologists and Environmentalists. Looks like a fist fight might break out soon!
Seems the Geologists (rock study-ers) say this era has not changed since 11,700 years ago so it is still called Holocene era.
The Environmentalist especially in the world of climate change say no - humans have messed with it too much, changed the world and it needs to be termed Anthropocene. The rock layer lovers shout back, with fists in air - you clean air lovers follow pop culture not hard science!
The question is when did humans begin leaving their mark on the planet? with the atomic era or with the agricultural signature?
Which side to you support?
agricultural its true we are messing up with the earth... who say is not true... have money reasons... im guessing they probably get paid quiet well to say the opposite...

There is validity in your choice although some of our agriculture has been positive - and perhaps considered minor compared to catastrophic events from earlier years,
the making of fossil fuels (requires much pressure) for example - and major shifting of the plate in plate techtonics - meteors that impacted the planet and devastated vast areas. We puny creatures can destroy - yet we create too - Is it on a grand scale? I don't know - I can be paid to keep quiet if needed?
Delatude: Hi Jean and a Happy New Year to everyone,"The question is when did humans begin leaving their mark on the planet? with the atomic era or with the agricultural signature?"
Would it be alright if I choose the Industrial Revolution?
Thank you
Yes, no one should slap you down in choosing the Industrial Revolution. There are those who would agree that the landfills of non-biodegradeable items is staggering - I still think the Geologists are shaking their heads - best to take one or to of them out for a beer.
galrads: I doubt we can ever kill/destroy this planet... we are, instead, destroying habitats for certain bio-life
We are certainly having our hand in the kill and destroy - however a natural volcano can also produce more sulpher-dioxide (might be getting my chemicals mixed up) pollutants into the atmosphere than one year's worth of car emission.... now add a volcano eruption and continue to not regulate car emissions, well maybe a recipe for disaster.
On the other hand there are great efforts to restore our flora to places. Scotland has a big initiative to repopulate their forests.

Maybe president obama can stop the oceans from rising and Al Gore can destroy the world, period, but no other person(s) has the power to blow this planet out of existence.
Man can not destroy the planet earth..... However, We destroy habitats which supports certain-life as we know it living presently on this planet. This planet will exist long after humans.

Both. I have heard some scholars use Anthropocene claiming its start in the 18th century as the Industrial Revolution began and the Little Ice Age came to an end. These scholars also happen to be geologists and most use the term informally, still calling the present epoch the Holocene. I can't see the reason for a fight over the naming of a geological epoch.

I guess I was just bored and looking for little entertainment - Ya' gotta work with me here, work with me here.
