I suspect my Virus / Malware software has missed something. My laptop has slowed down and it feels like the processor is doing something in the background. Does anyone know any free software that will scan my drive without making the problem worse? Failing that, I'll need to format and reload my O/S.

buy a mac and drop the old laptop on the bin.. or install linux in the laptop
How full is it...go below 1.5gb...and it'll slow down...run disk cleanup...you'll only cause conflicts if you install another virus scan...yours might be running in the background...free up some space I'd say....

you can install ten antivirus-Apps,as long as they are On-Demand,and only one is active at the time!

Hi GG. Sounds like tracing cookies and or a Trojan. If the usual anti virus progs miss them. try SuperAntiSpyware, its free and it works well. Download it and run it (the usual ads to upgrade will be there etc, just ignore them) Just worked on my sisters Vaio and the usual only found one or two but this prog found 295 and one Trojan and removed them and its now binging away. When selecting the Scan with it, select all drives that show up and perform a Full Scan. Can take an hour or two if you do nothing else and use the hi performance scan op. Best of luck - John
Select the red Free Edition - Save as, to somewhere you know it will be and the when done, open the folder and click it to Run. The rest is self explanatory
unless it is hardware issue and a virus issue, you can try "Wise Disk Cleaner" and "Wise Registry Cleaner". And remove unnecessary files in drive C (or the drive which runs ur OS ) . increase the virtual memory little bit.

Go to startmenu then Run , type Prefetch and press enter, somefiles will show, Ctrl+A, delete all files, then check your laptop speed, it would be good, do this, i have other solution also

Spot on John. Conrad's program found and removed a single Trojan and laptop seems to be as good as ever. Thanks guys.
