You're probably right going Japanese Annie. I have a big Ford myself and as they age, reliablity and wear and tear seem to become an issue.

Suzuki are better known for motorbikes than cars though and for reliability I would urge you to look more for something suitable in a Toyota. conversing

I was looking at Toyota and I'll be lucky if I pick up 03 for money I have. Looking at Polo's, Fiesta, Corsa (new shape) but really looking for a good small car with 1.3 engine or less

Awww, theyre so cute, the little landrover that isnt really a landrover laugh

Heard on BBC news earlier in the year that Suzuki have one of the highest pass rates in the UK MOT's, theyre pretty well regarded, as are Toyota (when they arent doing a recall laugh) but, you have them figured on price! A Yaris or Auris in the 06/07 bracket aint gonna be cheap!

As a side note, Citreon and Renault came out pretty bad in the results in the same survey as mentioned above; no surprise there! laugh

fifitheminx: another thing annie.. the reg plate and age is less important than the engine and how long they survive..

with a toyota the engine lasts longer..dont worry about the year...id rather drive a 80k toyota thats 10 yrs old than a 7 yr old kia/hyundai/peugeot/ford with 100k

I taxi'd with a 01 diesel avensis that had 450,000 on the clock.... it's in retirement but still running. conversing

I'm a bit biased, but a 05/06 Ford Focus is a nice car, cheap parts, reliable and not bad on fuel.

Isn't your fella in Limerick a Piston Head?

Unless they are low mileage avoid Volkswagen or Ford (my mechanic says the Volklswagen engines are soft..whatever that means and I own a Ford), and any Opel that has a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt.

27 years of experience with dealerships and independant garages should make me qualified to give advice...

Jimney's have weak gearbox bearings in the input shaft area, if (as is likely) the vehicle is out of warranty your looking a very big bill in the face for gearbox removal and a strip and repair..

Volkswagen Polo...
I have encouraged all my family to get the 1.2 three cylinder timing chain models, they took my advice, and i just see the cars come service time...Happy them, happy me....

Like Godsgift said, opel / vauxhall chain drive cars, trouble, self adjusters give problems, seldom the same afterwards...

Toyotas, lovely vehicles, but high residual prices, and sellers know that (same with VW's), In spite of what people will tell you (cos they are not experts), Renault still make some nice practical small cars...Modus (the best value for money) was the least problematic in my 5 years at BCMG Ennis...

Im sure you will hear all sorts of comments here from people with opinions, but if they have not worked with cars they are guessing and running on heresay...

If you want to know more, PM me and ill return your enquirey....

Regards...

AB....handshake....

Thanks everyone for the replies I know the focus is a good car but once it goes wrong it keeps going wrong.

I don't really want a 2 door car to much bother with a child and I just don't like them full stop.

Was warned off the Jimmy as when it goes belly up it's very expensive to fix.

Looking at polo's corsa's and fiesta's mainly but few nice swifts around and I remember reading that they are ok car for the money.

Have to get cash in hand first so hoping by end of month I'll be sorted

Check this website out.

Select super minis, used, and it will give you the best buys including common faults. Guide prices are in STG, it also lists the common faults

I own an original model Ford Focus Zetec, I have had it for 5 years, and I will not part with it till it falls asunder, It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned and the parts are cheap enough, especially if you can get them from ebay and scrap yards.
I have had golfs in the past, lovely cars to drive, but I found parts expensive, and they are a heavy car, so you use more fuel.
I have also had a renualt and will never buy one ever again.
