Mysst: Heads up Australia From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under.
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.
The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria..... lone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!) While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins andassaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.
The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note Americans, before it's too late! Will you be one of the sheep to turn yours in? WHY? You will need it.
Hi ah Msst.. I am glad that you put up this post... I will be the first to say... that the city I live in is a dirty secreted little city, pretty to look at .. but def not beautiful.. and the homocides that we have in this quiet little city is beyond belief..
But you see, you can pick your area to live...
I chose an upmarket.. quiet little valley, where nothing in particular happens... that is ,,, if you dont count the ijits that start fires... and force the local country fire service people to be on the run all summer...
There is very little apart from true blue Aussies and English living here... but in the very north, and very south.. the feral parts... well, there is so much disturbance.. and so much in poverty, that there is likely to be home invasion, theft, non education, stabbings and shootings..
So, I am one of the lucky ones.. ( by the grace of God) but its true, that when you put a whole bunch of people in lower socio economic areas together, they turn to drugs, theft and violence ..so much so... that it becomes a way of life for them..
Those shootings... which occur ... far too frequently, occur in those areas... and the police are kept busy...
but still... I am glad that we dont have guns.. however, as I said.. I live in a fairly good area...
Merriweather: Hi Conrad... I dont mind a good debate... and to mix the pot with suggestions.. not just argue for the sake of arguement... like some in here...
yep, thought the same thing when I opened the Thread this morning!
Read on Yahoo news last night that VP Biden was talking about some techology and making it so that a gun couldn't be fired unless it was handled by the actual owner of said gun.
That was one of the most stupidest ideas I've ever read.
I would ask why you actually think that, but I am guessing that you assume you know my heritage and it has something to do with some gunfight in history that made the world what it is today, blah, blah, blah...but in reality, you don't know what the outcome would have been had anything turned out differently so stop preaching and pretending the world is perfect because it never will be and you can't assume that being the owner of a firearm guarantees your safety. I am sure plenty of innocent people have died trying to defend themselves with a gun and come off second best anyway, not to mention the times when you are not carrying your firearm, and you have to sleep sometime.
MICKEYMOST: Listen to yourself man. You are digging a bloody great hole for yourself.
It was called World War 1 and World War 2 ,emphasise on the word WORLD.
Yes, we saved your butts in both of those world wars. Your tiny island made a decent landing strip. And Churchill was greatfull for it as we'll as a credit card from the usa and our industry that supplied both Britain and Russia. Show us some respect and don't ask us to save you again.

Tose who forget history are doomed to repeat it. but do it without us next time. Ok!
galrads: You seem to also have a false sense of security based on the blood of American women and men.
And I believe the ANZACS have had your back at times also, so stop thinking you are the saviours of the world. I think a lot countries have lost a few good men in the name of war and you just make a mockery of everyone who lost friends and relatives regardless.

the only ones to have seriously have our backs, that I recall, where the French when they bankrolled our revolutionary war when we kicked britain's behind.

I am not sure how gun toting citizens and armed forces really have in common other than the fact it makes an easy correlation for your argument, it is hardly the same. Last time I heard any news reports, I didn't hear of any military people holding up the 7/11. We are supposed to be allies in world events, but if sprouting the history of the wars and spooning with your gun helps you sleep at night, knock yourself out. Speaking of spooning, I hear my pillow whispering my name and it is a lot softer than a gun to nuzzle into, so I am off to bed. Make sure you you don't throw a leg over too hard, it might be cocked and loaded ready for some action.
