Hi all,

Well, I've started a lovely relationship with a woman from another country whose native language is not English.

So my question to all is, what do you think about different people speaking different languages, can this hinder true love? heart beating

Cheers,

Best of luck with you, Halv0. My feeling is, no, it actually helps! It disarms both parties from their usual social defenses, and makes both kinda "reliant" on each other to be understood. As long as you two don't stumble over some major roadblock (like having children), you should be well off. Think how much fun you'll have teaching each other idioms while snuggled in bed!

Yeah thanks, I've actually found this out myself. I think that it has actually been a help. It certainly has added a lot of fun to our relationship. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Especially when she says something to me that is best for me not to understand....

Actually, she is amazing. I would never have considered this 10 years ago. Because of this bias that I had, I did myself out of a lot of love and fun.

Congratulations Halv, all the best for the 2 of you. wine

I'm not a native English speaker, but it is important for me that I understand a partner / the language fully otherwise I would feel uncomfortable. dunno But it a matter of "training", the level of understanding will get better over time.

4 languages! That's amazing! Wow. I'm flat out mastering my own language. Ha ha ha. It is fun learning other languages though. Always sound stupid when I speak them. When a friend was teaching me Vietname, she said that I sounded like a baby learning to talk. Well I thought that was a compliment. At least she didn't call me a "dickhead"....

So attempting to learn yet another language now. So far can say "hello", "thanks" and that's about it. But it is fun.

I am sorry, but for me it would be an issue.

I am very pleased that for you and your lady it is not. If it is not an issue for you...then why question it? The only people in your relationship is the two of you. If it is working...that is fabulous and I wish you all the very best.

Only if the two people involved in that particular relationship let it.

A solution might be to learn each others language.JAT

Immerse yourself in love and language,....immersion is the most effective way to "learn" IMHO

I feel it depends on your intellect and your need for deep, meaningful exchange and discussion of various topics.
I'm not a native english speaker and I often felt frustrated in my love relationships to not being able to express myself fully and not being able to share my interests due a lack of vocabulary.
After 13 years of living abroad this is one of the reasons I'll be relocating back to my own turf and there are no words for my excitement to finally be able to speak again my mother tongue.

Different languages come usually with a different cultural background which can be very intense.

I wish you all the best and just take it slow and give it time before making any serious decisions.
