I was food shopping today. Americans will know the name Entenmanns for packaged bakery goodies. I was standing at the Entenmanns counter.
The Entenmanns counter was huge. There were donuts, coffecakes, muffins, you name it. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I just fantasized about everything on the counter.
There was a woman in front of me leaning into her shopping cart. She was taking a long time to move so I looked to see what she was doing in the shopping cart.
She was taking the price sticker off one item and putting it on another item. That's because donuts were on sale....2 boxes for 4 dollars. But she was only buying one box of donuts and one coffee cake. She wanted the sale price for the donuts and she put the price sticker on the coffeecake.
She looked up and saw me looking at her. She moved her cart away from me but she didn't try to disappear. I thought that she knew I saw what she did.
I could have asked her.......what are you doing.
I could have just gone to the manager and told him that she changed prices
I could have minded my own business.
I could hope that the secuity camera saw her do it.
I minded my own business for a couple reasons:
1. It would have taken too long to get the store manager; 2. If they called the police I would have to be a witness and that would have been time consuming; 3. My back and knee were hurting like h'll 4. And, the frozen items and fresh meat in my cart would have been exposed to the store heat.
This was only a 2 dollar item but this woman was dressed very nicely, hair was colored and had she class written all over her.....except when she changed the price sticker.
I would have gone to the cashier and told her. Theft forces up prices for others as well as insurances for the shops which they pass onto the consumer.
montemonte: someone changing the price on an item.

Firstly,In the Meijer's store I shop in have employees walking around posing as customers.
Secondly, she could've just claimed the item was marked at that particular price and the store would have to let her have that item at that particular price regardless.
Thirdly,I would've never approached someone I saw shoplifting etc. They could have a weapon for all one knows.

My store also has what looks like shoppers posing as customers. I'm in there so often I know who they are. In this situation, nobody would have seen what she did because she was leaning way into the cart. Only someone where I was standing could see it happening. I would never approach anyone either mainly because she would have told me to mind my own business or made some other kind of scene that backfired on me. So I let it go but like Pices said, if a child saw that, what lesson does it teach. Children are innocent and if a child saw that they probably would have said....Mommy, that lady did a bad thing and the mother would walk away which would be the right thing to do.
She could say it was marked that way unless I attested to being a witness to the crime.
I remember back in the day when Wal-Mart had sticker tags, my ex husband was wanting a saw, well he went and took a sticker off of a small tool (don't remember what) and stuck it on the saw!!!! I was appalled!! refused to checkout with him...needless to say that marriage didn't last long..WHAT A LOSER!!!

The child would probably think double standards and say hmm"Ok my mommy says it's wrong to steal but when she saw that lady steal my mommy did nothing".
I would have pointed and loudly proclaimed...HEY! NICE EXAMPLE YOU SET WHEN YOU STEAL!!! I don know if anything would have come from it but it would have made her hesitate the next time.

If I was going to do something I would have asked her quietly.....What are you doing. The look in her eyes would say it all. She would hang her head and fumble to find the words to say.....what do you mean. And then I would tell her what I saw and she would say in a loud voice to bring attention to her ....you're crazy and then she would strut away from me.
And that's why I didn't do anything. Too many what if's she said this what if she did that.
She knows what she did and she has to live with it.
What gets me is that this woman could more then likely afford the few extra cents the coffee cake cost. In fact, the coffee cake was probably 2.99 (I know the prices of Entenmanns ) so all she saved was 99 cents
Yes, it is stealing. She paid for it and she stole the profit from the shop.
If she is well dressed, she's not that hungry to go steal sweets. I believe that for her it is an impulse, let say a challenge pitting her cunning against the store. There are many people who don't need to steal, but they cannot resist the challenge and the frill. Most of the time, they are trinkets or items of small importance. Sometime, they have status in the community they live in. If I recall, maybe a year ago, it was a movie star who done the same thing. I am not talking about the organized thieves that plunder the most expensive items from stores. You call the police, most likely she will have to pay the store, go on front of a judge and pay a small fine.
I wouldn't get involved, soon or later she will get caught. Let say that I don't know her financial situation and I wouldn't want to be the one responsible for giving her some grief for this small amount.

I was dating a guy who put loose nails in his pocket. I looked him in the eye as if....what are you doing... and he smiled. He never paid for them.
Years later on he told me that he had stolen thousands and thousands of computer equipment from the company he and I worked for. He said the FBI was onto him and did I want to help him get out of the mess. After six years of being with him I dumped him like hot pancakes.
