A major earthquake registering at magnitude 8 has hit near the Solomon Islands, with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) issuing a tsunami warning for a wide swathe of islands in the South Pacific
The quake struck at a depth of 5.8km at 11.07am AEDT on Wednesday, near the Santa Cruz Islands, which are part of the Solomon Islands nation, and sea level readings indicate a tsunami has been generated.
It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts
The quake has been placed as being 70km west of Lata and nearly 600km from the national capital, Honiara.
The PTWC said "sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated".
There doesn't appear to be a threat to Australia from the tsunami generated by the quake People living in Pacific nations should check whether tsunami warning is active for your area. There has been some damaged in Honiara caused by tsunami

I hope everyone is taking precautions! I wasn't aware of the earthquake until awhile ago, but was aware of the wildfire situation. As I work for Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (Forest Service) as a Ranger, I am aware of the co-operative wildfire agreement that exists, but to date, no "call" has been put in for assistance from Canada - in a heartbeat mates! Just give the word! Stay safe!
oh thanks mate, its likely to burn for a week or so, i'm sixty km or more away from the area, but nothing but gum trees separate us, a wind change is due tonight hope push it back on its self thanks for your thoughts
