Working alongside all the production and logistics companies, they are looking towards economy of scales.

Guido has spent the last 40 years going out and catching a few fish that he could sell to provide for his family. But after 40 years, his boat is very slow (meaning he needs longer times to get there and back) and it costs to have a crew on board. And then the boat is 40 years old. So he now needs a new boat. Costs mega-bucks compared to what he has (but sinking).

New boat means more fish to catch to repay the loan, and wages have gone up. Okay bigger boat that will get more fish every time he goes out. But must stay out longer to get enough to pay the loan. And to compete with the bigger boat that Guiseppe has bought.

Sorry, not having a go at the Italians per se but they do seem to be the ones who have really made a go of it in the fishing industry so only use their names and only as an example of what does happen in some industries.

The only reason that boat is down here is because they have fished out the waters where it used to fish!

Australia has world best practice awards with our fish stocks and who can fish in our waters,

You cant drag everything out off the water in one go and expect anything to be there next year?

Its just common sense,
professor doh

makes no difference if the boats one big one or a lot of smaller ones . Its the number of total fish caught that counts . In our waters you have to have quota to fish , go over that and the boat can hand up in the crowns hands along with the fish . Laws get broken though thats could be why there are penalties .

robplum: its like the dairy industry, accounts popped up stating it was cheaper to transport milk from and more profitable per cow to milk thousands of cows, in one big rotary cowshed. So the government forced closure of most all family farms of all types in Australia. With lots of rural industry sold off to the Communists Chinese...
Likewise the government have regulated against all the small family fishing boats around the whole Australian coast line, certainly they have in a big way up in Queensland.
The unproductive out dated two party political system deserves to be treated likewise in the coming elections, vote for an independent
