Forget turning the power off at the point that’s a waste off time? Yes unplug the toaster and the dryer when not in use, but the microwave? TV? Forget it, if you were smart in the first place you would have checked the average yearly power use for the appliance before buying it? I did,

I buy my coffee from Coles, its Nescafe 43, its $17 for 500gm always now!
I buy those two for one specials all the time but keep an eye on the use by dates! You don’t want too have too eat or drink it by the next day,

If you have a gas cook top like I do, throw away the electric kettle now! They only cost $8 to buy but around $200 per year to use just for one person? That without your mates around for a coffee, I have two coffees per day a electric kettle uses one kw off power per boil if half full each time here its 22cents per unit so 2 cups per day 365 days equals $160.06 per year,

How old is your fridge? And how much did it cost and what is it costing you to run?
Mine is eight years old cost $800 is a large 432sf litre fridge and uses 729 units per year at a cost off .22cents per unit, now cost $160.16 per year to run, unless the kid is standing there with the door open?

When I updated my TV two years ago I noticed a plasma TV used more power per year than my fridge that runs 24/7, so I brought an LCD TV that uses half as much as the fridge,

Then again I just spent $8000 so I never get another power bill again! And the government paid $1600 towards it,

Getting three teenagers out of the nest was a huge budget enhancer cheers

I write a shoping list while looking in the fridge to see what I really need before I shop.

I cut up veges that I wont cook in a week and freeze them to cut down on throwing stuff out.

Grow a herb garden, it only takes a few pots and save on buying fresh herbs all the time.

Wash your clothes in cold water.

applause

I can get plasma TVs for free!
People drop them off at the tip daily! As well as the old analogue Tvs, we have bins full off them, big bins!
Maybe they should send them off too third world countries instead of putting them into land fill? Like our old phones used to get sent to Russia

I've found I can save heaps of money on food bills.
All it takes is a bit of discipline and imagination. Here is how I have cut my food bill by one third.
> Make too much dinner so there is plenty for lunch the next day
> Keep take-away food to a bare minimum
> Cut back on expensive meats
> Make stews with lots of cheap but healthy ingredients like cabbage, potato's, onions, split peas, beans
> Try saving more than the week before, (learn new tricks)
> Buy generic branded food
> Stop eating junk foods ( bad for you anyways )

The list can go on and on and on.......I keep getting better and better at it and treat it as a game, I eat well (better than before) and I am putting the money I save in the bank.
One week I only spent $30 on food, I don't do this every week but I want to try and beat that too.
In the end it helps me with budgeting on things I need and things I think I need...professor

Just working this out for my power bills. I did decide to buy some decent aircons so has doubled my power bill during the hotter 4 months of the year. Based on the $8,000 less $1,600 (=$6.400) you have quoted, it will take me 9.7 years to break even, not including inflation or the extraordinary charges power companies will charge me over that time (because people are going 'solar' and they are getting less income).

Based on replacing or upgrading the system for any number of reasons (new technology means it is not upgradable when you wished as new microchips are not compatible, etc) is this long-term investment really worth it? Some of the systems installed over the last 3 years have already failed and mean mega-upgrades because the newer techonolgy is not compatible with the "old" systems.

Already the Govt is not supporting the "GREEN" rebates/purchasing price they originally promised for the "home-supplier."

If I was replacing a hot water system, I would defintely go for solar hot water as one I had before did have massive savings. Would I replace the existing system that is working perfectly. NO as I cannot see a financial benefit at this time.

If I was building a new home, I would go for solar power, solar hot water, wind generators, etc as the costs for the "freebie" technology is not much more than the conventional power supplies and would be a good financial benefit in a very few short years.
