I guess it depends upon whether you think a god is an authority figure and people unable to reason.
If you think that, then a god would merely punish when it doesn't get its own way and it would account for why much is so poorly reasoned within religion.
Personally, I struggle to get my head round the ultimate thingymajig being unable to express itself and having such poor communication skills (despite talking to people all the time apparently) that it must resort to Draconian measures with the fully cognisant beings that it has created.
Does a god punish animals, as well?
If punishment may also be about withholding family blessing, rather than just being struck, if a god doesn't communicate its reasoning for doing so, its withholding feedback of results, creating a laborious, or totally ineffective learning process.
If you ask a subject to draw 10cm lines, but behind a screen so they can't see their results, they learn nothing about measure. If someone else gives them feedback every 10 lines drawn, they learn to quantify a little more accurately. Feedback for every line drawn and the task is infinitely more successful.
It strikes me as odd that a god would create an amazing type of being and then not relate to this being appropriately with respect to its functioning.
To my mind, the concept of a god which punishes is for those who only value, or understand the very basics of human cognitive functioning.
To believe that because humans punish other humans, then a god must also, is not proof that a god has it right, but perhaps it indicates that humans have created a god in their own image. As we evolve and understand more about ourselves, so an image of a god will also change.
"Without obedient children the home becomes a place of anarchy and chaos". An interesting concept given anarchy requires honest communication, but not obedience, other than to the concept of honesty. Its not necessarily chaotic, but if it is, chaos may be a source of creativity. Obedience in a traditional sense of an authority figure demanding their will be done, is rarely honest, or creative given the obedient ones are suppressed from communicating and the authority struggles to keep logical with missing information.
I'm about half way through the link. I'm going to stop there. I have things to do.
That thing celebrating where some fella gets nailed to some wood because its a good and just god's will?
Would you like a bit of my chocolate egg, Maus? Sorry, its a Fair Trade one, so it has little to do with a good and just god's design.
Who's will? I thought one does that for some light weekend entertainment. Not sure if it's good but it's damn fun for the kids. They will make great carpenters one day. You got some nerve Jac, fair trade? what's next? Vegetarian tea drinkers? Still, is it good? Anyway, no no, we got the real stuff. Dozens of cute wee little battery chicks and bunnies. What did not get devoured today will be tortured by F&N tomorrow morning. They look forward to hear the little squeaks and see those ears go all floppy and sloppy. Hot chocolate for breakfast. You see, sometimes kids love it when parents split up. Ohh, I forgot, yes, a lot of the wee unborn go in the pot as well
That's an interesting article, but too judgemental and value loaded to be accurate.
It fails as most retrospective conclusions do, and that is to formulate ideas based upon the current value framework, rather that with impartiality, or objectivity.

I have things to do too, but the link didn't take that long to read. god with a lower case g stands for Satan, who by the way knows that God, our Creator exists.
God doesn't punish animals because they obey His laws.
God does give us choices, but unless we believe that Jesus is His son we will not be saved. Read John 14:6.
