I got me a new toy today, a Nexus tablet computer.

Now I just have to figure out what you do with them. I've managed to connect to my home wifi.
Anyone have one of these or another tablet computer? Mine doesn't have 3G so can't connect to the internet via mobile, but that's fine with me as the cost can be exorbitant I've heard.

I lurrrrve my Samsung tab, had it for a couple of years now and take it everywhere grin

Use it for internet when I'm away from home and also as a wifi point for my lappy .. costs me $49 p/m for 5 gig from Telstra which is enough to run the tablet independently and the lappy from it when I'm at home. Telstra is the best provider for my area, everything else is rubbish.

It takes great pics and videos, I store my favourite music and games on it and use it as an e-reader thumbs up

Ah yes, good thinking, Jem. I'm lucky my work pays for us to use their virus program for free, as they figure it's money well spent. Too many people were bringing viruses in on their memory sticks, etc.
Speaking memory sticks will they fade away to be replaced by "cloud" or "sky" storage?
I've yet to really understand what an App is. It would be good if I could get Excel and Word, but they'll be expensive I guess. Any free apps and what can they do?

Yep, me too Curly. laugh

I'd like to try downloading some ebooks Serene, once I figure out how.

One problem I face is that it wants to know my Google mail account name (email address) but I have two, a work one, and my personal one. I'd like to be able to switch from one to the other as needed. So I've given it my work one as that's going to be the most useful and see how I go later.

Yes, that'll be interesting to try. I'll wait until I become a bit more familiar with it before trying that one out.

just did a search on Play for Android programs. Came up with Thinkfree Office or Kingsoft Office, both free. Just trial and error Obs.

I have only had my tablet since just before Christmas, and I mainly only use it for an e-reader but love it.

I use FB-Reader for my ebooks and find it to be good. There are others out there. I need to change the ebooks to another format I use Calibre on the computer to convert then load onto the tablet.

Still like to put a book-mark in where I stop reading. And do love to just be able to pick up a book and keep going. After 40+ years of computers, I do like to be able to find a comfortable setting to be able to "read" rather than "glance" at a computer.

I had an apple ipad, and I hated it!! I spent a fortune on gadgets and gizmos so I could use a memory stick and cards so I could move my pics etc from one device to another having windows based computers and android phones and it still wasnt compatible with anything.

I now have a HP Envy 2 which is a hybrid laptop/tablet and I love it so far. It is quick, easy to use, I can use it either way as a tablet or laptop with the convenience of both. I use that at work and I have a notebook at home. I still prefer the hybrid to the notebook at the moment. Just got them both though so time will tell.

I admit am one of the computer illiterates. I first starting using computers in 1971. Revolutionary. I had a hand-held calculator in 1973. Revolutionary. I still don't know the difference between a farque-synesgy or the farque.

I have a Notebook bit of paper where I take notes during meetings which I transcribe to my computer to put on record. I have Laptop Notebook for my guys to do field work and later transfer to the computer.

And I do have an Iphone that can do all that ...... if only someome could explain in simple non-moronic terms how I can do that stuff.frustrated dunno

I use 'Documents to go' app for my android tablet for excel, word etc, cost me about $2.50 from on-line app market...

I use a mobile broadband USB dongle with my lappy and just swap it to the tablet when I leave home... professor

Hey Obs,

you will already have Google Play store loaded onto your tablet so open it and have a look at the free Aps, Lot's of categories. I have at least 100 Aps on my phone. weather, maps, Convertpad for conversions of temp and everything else. Music Hound is a really good Ap for free, you turn it on and it listens to music playing and then tells you what the song is after about 30 seconds, great for when you miss hearing a song title on the radio or for when we simply forget the name of a song.

There is a huge choice of Aps, havn't paid for one yet laugh
Add and delete as you like. Also the Aps are rated as they don't always work well on different hardware.

Play and enjoy handshake

Wash I think your right about cloud, never usually used
memory sticks.I have noticed there is no passwords with cloud and
it could be easily hacked like bluetoothing etc.Excuse my thickness, but this is my opinion.

I use Dropbox and Google drive and the password is set up when you first use it. It's linked to your email account, so if you change your email password regularly you should be fine. But I'm sure they'll find a way to hack them. I don't put anything sensitive in there.
