The Pentagon said the shield would be ready within weeks, adding to warships that were sent to the area earlier.
The North had named Guam among a list of possible targets for attack that included Hawaii and the US mainland.
North Korea is not thought to have the technology to strike the US mainland with either a nuclear weapon or a ballistic missile, analysts say.
Co Jonathan Marcus BBC diplomatic correspondent Despite all the bluster, experts do not believe that North Korea has the capacity to launch a nuclear-armed ballistic missile at the US. However, American bases in South Korea, Japan and perhaps even as far away as Guam could well be within range of Pyongyang's conventionally armed missiles.
The US response has been a mixture of reassurance for its allies and prudent defensive precautions, including the deployment of warships with anti-missile capabilities.
Other anti-missile defences in the region are also being bolstered, a step that carries an additional message to Beijing - that if Pyongyang remains on this course anti-missile systems will only proliferate, something that may eventually compromise the effectiveness of China's own nuclear deterrent.
But it is capable of targeting US military bases in the region with its mid-range missiles.
Pyongyang has also continued to refuse access to workers from the South into a joint industrial zone in the North.
The Kaesong complex is staffed mainly by North Koreans but funded and managed by South Korean firms.
Pyongyang blocked access for a second day on Thursday, and threatened to shut down the zone.
North Korea has issued an array of statements in recent weeks threatening nuclear strikes and attacks on specific targets in the US and South Korea.
It has announced a formal declaration of war on the South, and pledged to reopen a mothballed nuclear reactor in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.
In its latest statement, attributed to a military spokesman, the North appeared to refer to ongoing military exercises between the US and South Korea in which the US has flown nuclear-capable bombers over the South.

The New York Times says: "The Obama administration was prudent to bolster its forces in the region. Many experts assume Mr Kim won't attack the world's top military power or its allies, but Washington has an obligation to guarantee that if this assumption is wrong, it can defend the homeland."
From the Washington Post: "What the administration really needs, however, is a new strategy for answering the provocations. Diplomacy hasn't worked; neither has pressuring China to restrain the Kim regime. What has are financial sanctions targeted at the ruling elite."
The New Jersey Star-Ledger says: "While many buy into the old disarmament-for-food storyline, there's another camp concerned this episode might be different: that Kim, with little more than a year on the job, might actually believe his nation has become a nuclear power."
Analysis: Vexing problem for the US Regional media play down danger The statement said the "ever-escalating US hostile policy towards the DPRK [North Korea] and its reckless nuclear threat will be smashed".
It promised to use "cutting-edge smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear strike means of the DPRK" and said the "merciless operation of its revolutionary armed forces in this regard has been finally examined and ratified".
The US Department of Defense said on Wednesday it would deploy the ballistic Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (Thaad) to Guam in the coming weeks.
The Thaad system includes a truck-mounted launcher and interceptor missiles.
US officials recently also announced that the USS John McCain, a destroyer capable of intercepting missiles, had been positioned off the Korean peninsula.

The opinion of the analysts doesn't matter if there exist a possibility that North Korea have the technology to strike the US mainland with either a nuclear weapon or a ballistic missile, and also US needs to protect their bases in the Pacific.
The antimissile shield is a kind of military development which should not be criticised even by the pacifists. If it's only a shield.
But what do you expect from NK if their capability of response is neutralised?.

The Foreign Office says it has no intention of evacuating its embassy in Pyongyang after North Korea warned foreign diplomats they may not be safe if war breaks out. The North Korean government asked foreign embassies whether they were considering evacuating staff, saying it cannot guarantee their safety in the event of conflict from April 10. Tensions in the region are high after reports that North Korea has now moved two missiles to its eastern coast and loaded them on mobile launchers. The Foreign Office says it "has no immediate plans to withdraw our embassy" in Pyongyang, adding it condemned the "provocation" by the North Korean government. Earlier, a spokesperson said: "The DPRK (The Democratic People's Republic of Korea) has responsibilities under the Vienna convention to protect diplomatic missions, and we believe they have taken this step as part of their continuing rhetoric that the US poses a threat to them. "We are considering next steps, including a change to our travel advice." It was not immediately clear why the date of April 10 had been mentioned, but there has been speculation that Pyongyang might schedule a firing to coincide with the birthday of the country's late founder Kim Il-Sung in mid-April. Russia intends to "clarify the situation" before making a decision on any possible evacuation, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported earlier in the day that two North Korean intermediate-range missiles had been moved by train to the country's eastern coast. The move fuels fears of an imminent firing. "It has been confirmed that North Korea, early this week, transported two Musudan mid-range missiles by train to the east coast and loaded them on vehicles equipped with launch pads," the agency said, quoting what it said was a top government official. The mobile launchers had since been hidden in special underground facilities, according to the report. Intelligence officials from the US, Japan and South Korea are monitoring the movement of the weapons. The Musudan missile is a mid-range weapon, meaning it is capable of reaching South Korea and Japan and perhaps also the US territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. "The range is between 3,000 to 4,000km (1,864 to 2,485 miles). There are major US military forces in Guam and a fixed number of troops to deal with the Korean peninsula, so I think these facts can reduce the possible danger there," said Kim Min-seok, South Korea's Defence Ministry spokesman. UN chief Ban Ki-moon said daily reports from Pyongyang were "really alarming and troubling" and urged North Korea to ease tensions. "Nuclear threat is not a game, it is very serious," he said, adding that any misjudgement or miscalculation could have "very serious implications". Speaking to Sky News, a security adviser to the South Korean government said there is no doubt that North Korea's capability is concerning. "The technological level of North Korean weapons has become much improved and better - especially their missile capability and their long-range artilleries," Kim Byungki said. "It is more uncertain, it is less predictable, there are more ways for them to destabilise us and there are more ways for us to respond ... so it is more complex."
The Musudan, which is manoeuvrable on the back of a specially designed mobile launch pad, is untested and its accuracy is unknown. Most experts believe the North Koreans lack the technological ability to mount a nuclear warhead into its tip. However, it can carry a significant load of conventional explosives which could cause considerable damage. It is not clear whether military commanders in North Korea have been given orders to fire the weapon in anger or as a test. ". @YahooNewsUK on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook BEST OF YAHOO! NEWS

diplomacy has failed. it is time for the u.s. and its allies get ready to take out north korea if it hits our bases and hits the south. i will say it again. macarthur should have been let to take out the north in the 50's and unified both countries. now we have to deal with the north militarily. obama should take a hint that this rouge nation is not listening and abiding international law. if they do hits us which they will then we should hit back harder

Here is an image that explains what the North Koreans really said:
Just as Iran and Russia, North Korea is self defensive.
And this picture explains it well:
