I think prejudices are based on experiences. Living in a culturally diverse area I have noticed disagreeable patterns among certain ethnicities and some people will generalize based on that. However, it's best to keep an open mind and realize that people are unique individuals.

misterioinferno: i dont think it has anything to do with experiences. sometimes people can be prejudiced according to what they hear or what some authorities say.
Glatlol: I dont agree, sometimes they are because of experiences.
Interesting, Do you believe this because you might stereotype all people of a certain color, say green people, as extremely violent because one green dude, on several occasions, tried to cut-off your head with a chain saw?

I'll be honest. If that was the case I'd definitely be wary of green dudes.
Much of Nature appears to be affected by prejudice, either from experience(s) or instinct, or an apparent lack thereof. For instance, parakeets that have been deliberately bred in color mutations other than the wild state (which is a dominant bright green), are chased off or killed by the wild group. Some avian specialists believe this is because the birds are threatened that the blue bird will attract predator attention. In humans, there has never been a clear reasoning as to why a race or races is treated differently than another. In my opinion, I believe it goes at least as far back as Puritan times, when people were singled out and burned or hung. People seem to need a hero and a villain, a witch and a wizard, etc... and someone who is different than the status quo in any certain area is targeted. New employees at a job are often ostracized even before they get a chance to prove themselves. A new renter in a long established apartment house may be prejudiced against, just because they're new. I'm sure my previous posts did make it seem as though I am prejudiced, but really I'm open minded. I had the benefit of growing up in a family who did not negatively influence me as far as prejudice is concerned. In second grade my best friend was Japanese. In fifth grade she was African American. My ex bf is Indian. I have not blocked any countries while on this site and have developed friendships with people from countries that others ordinarily block. Of the two men I have met so far on this site, one was Pakistani, the other Jamaican.
As to the comment about the green eyed dude with a chainsaw, yes, I would be WARY. After checking for the presence of chainsaws I'm sure we could be friends.

One probably not but if hundreds of green dudes repeatedly tried it then I reckon I would form an opinion alright :)
