President of the U.S., Obama, promised to close Guantanamo Bay Prison many years ago, and still has not.

What are your thoughts/opinions?

Should it remain open or should it be shut down permanently?

It may not be closed today but since that time that he said it would be closed, scheduled to be closed before now, since he said that they have moved many prisoners and they have had other things going on as well, but all this is known by a simple search. I am surprised it is not included in the opening post so readers might know where things stand at this time ( to our knowledge ) below is a partial history and from what the conclusion states that Congress is the entity that does not want to move the last of these prisoners to the mainland, though many have been already.

On January 22, 2009, President Barack Obama signed an order to suspend the proceedings of the Guantanamo military commission for 120 days and to shut down the detention facility within the year. On January 29, 2009, a military judge at Guantanamo rejected the White House request in the case of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, creating an unexpected challenge for the administration as it reviewed how the United States brings Guantanamo detainees to trial. On May 20, 2009, the United States Senate passed an amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009 (H.R. 2346) by a 90-6 vote to block funds needed for the transfer or release of prisoners held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. President Obama issued a Presidential memorandum dated December 15, 2009, ordering Thomson Correctional Center, Thomson, Illinois to be prepared to accept transferred Guantanamo prisoners.

The Final Report of the Guantanamo Review Task Force, dated January 22, 2010, published the results for the 240 detainees subject to the Review: 36 were the subject of active cases or investigations; 30 detainees from Yemen were designated for 'conditional detention' due to the poor security environment in Yemen; 126 detainees were approved for transfer; 48 detainees were determined 'too dangerous to transfer but not feasible for prosecution'.

On January 7, 2011, President Obama signed the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill, which, in part, placed restrictions on the transfer of Guantanamo prisoners to the mainland or to foreign countries, thus impeding the closure of the facility. U.S. Secretary of Defense Gates said during testimony before the US Senate Armed Services Committee on February 17, 2011: "The prospects for closing Guantanamo as best I can tell are very, very low given very broad opposition to doing that here in the Congress." Congress particularly opposed moving prisoners to facilities in the United States for detention or trial. In April 2011, Wikileaks began publishing 779 secret files relating to prisoners in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. As of March 2013, 166 detainees remain at Guantanamo.

I hope this helps others to see a little more of what has happened at least in part.

Thank you nikogas for the very long, but informative narrative. I intentionally chose to keep my thread question short and sweet as I'm sure it was pretty self-explanatory.

Thanks again for filling in the gaps.

WOW! So YOU'RE running the thread now? I don't see your thoughts/opinions posted, only your lengthy narrative, that I don't believe was needed, but again, thanks.

I'll play along and pretend you're in charge here. Plain and simple, I believe it should be closed. That's all I will comment about it. Now your turn boss man.

I think it should remain open indefinitely. Trials should be held for all inmates there. If they then serve time, let them do it there, not here on the continent or anywhere they are not wanted.

I don't mind giving my opinion but not with this sarcastic facade that you have chosen to use today. I am not a boss man. And actually I am still wondering just who you really are. I put the post there because your original post was misleading and it even still seems like you did not read what I posted anyway. So what is the point? After I read the dumb post that I copied on there that you felt was some sort of insult, I realized that they have been closing it down but even though there has been progress it seems that Congress doesn't want to close it and it has nothing to do with what Obama wants. Bush opened it and it will probably stay open longer. I really wish you did not take offense so quickly. There are some that will go on more than I do. Maybe in the future you can just ban me from your thread and then you won't have to look at my face. It is too early to be getting bent out of shape. I just had my pizza breakfast, mellows you out sis. LOL

GUZMAN1: I do not care who the person was who said it, but most countries in the world and some U.S. institutions have said that what happens in Guantanamo is a violation of Human Rights.

and what I am saying, primarily, is that the UN is full of a bunch of phonies and hypocrites; especially Pillay. I don't know anyone living here besides a few hypocritical self-serving politicians who want Guantanamo Bay closed.

Given a chance to vote on the disposition of Guantanamo, I'd vote to keep it running because it is better place for terrorist, given a sentence, wanting to kill Americans, than placing them in general population with other prisoners.

They Most UN members don't believe in the right to life we should abort the UN. They want to register and take away some of our guns too and make it harder to buy ammo or reloading supplies, or tax them to death.

The UN is a group people who don't believe in a right to life and Americans are supposed to give up their means to protect their constitutional rights to protect their lives against governments gone corrupt or others who would harm or take our lives. I hope our government does not attempt to give away or nullify our constitutional rights for any reason or to some lame bullchit organization like the UN.

Keep the Hypocritical UN over their.

A lot of information was learned in Guantanamo that saved quite a few terroristic acts. The ones they let out of there went back home and right back to their terrorist brothers. They thought we weren't watching them but how wrong they were.

Covert operatives are more then likely in there. Eventually they will talk to someone they think is their terrorist brother conversing Keep the place open.

That's complete rubbish. The innocents there say what they think their captors want them to say, implicating anybody they can think of and the 'real' terrorists are sufficiently strong willed and have belief in their cause that they won't buckle. Torture was tried by the Germans in WWII, PROPER torture, pulling fingernails beating half to death and the lots of agents didn't buckle. There was a very interesting documentary where eight civilians were 'interrogated' using techniques used at Guan Bay. One was told a piece of information the others knew nothing. After a week, with ordinary people, not motivated fanatics the interrogators were unable to work out what the valuable information was.
