These days I think people are financially better off not marrying, and living apart and spending time together, but not living together.

You get more perks from the government, and less bills and headaches if it goes "pear shaped".

Pensioners are actually better off being single, than being married.

I think that marriage these days are for those that don't really care about the financial implications as a priority in their lives.

That's OK, I'm bored enough to answer. you're talking about those who get money for marrying someone who wants residency in the country?
Are you considering it? Could be easy money.

I agree also it would make for a better relationship that way you would know that you and your partner have genuine feelings for each other , enjoy each other's company & it has nothing to do with money or assets and the best part is you can go home to your own haven and have your own space it's the new age relationship especially for older people thumbs up happy place very happy

Okay, so reading the comment and not the title..... blushing

Anywhere where a government legislates something, it means that an authorised person has a licence to rip another off.

For example, marriage law in Australia states that one must be married by an authorised marriage celebrant. You can't elope any more or go an sign the register at Births, Deaths, and Marriages.

So I went to a marriage celebrant as the law says.... $550.00 bucks for the MC, $45.00 for the actual marriage certificate from the govt (what you sign on the day means diddly squat - what a con), oh, and because my fiance is not native English speaking, by law we must have an interpreter at the wedding ceremony to interpret it just in case she misses the meaning of one poxy word that is spoken. KaChing! KaChing! KaChing! Oh and then there is the $65.75 fee just to get a poxy stamp on the marriage certificate so that the marriage certificate will be recognised outside of Australia as being authentic and genuine!

Oh and don't forget all those fees the councils charge just to be able to "do it" on the beach, or in a park.... KaChing!

No spontaneity any more either, by law a couple has to lodge an "Notice of Intention to Marry" no later than one month before the set wedding date, and no sooner than 18 months before the set wedding date.

Don't blame the middle man. Blame the government that has legislated the fees now just to get hitched.... when ever the government passes a law, the charges associated with it just go through the roof!
