Australia produces animals that other countries want to import from us. Reference was to the Four Corners program relating to on Indonesian abbatoirs method of killing the livestock that their (the Indonesian) feedlots have produced further than the Australian breeders have produced.
If anyone has followed on from the original story, the abbatoir in question had not realised that a more humane way of killing the cattle is achievable until this documentary occurred. They have changed their ways to what us Westerners consider "more humane."
Indonesia buys our young cattle, now down to 350 kgs, and they fatten them up in their feedlots to a suitable weight for slaughter.
The result of our Govt's ban on live export meant that many of our cattle were destined to try and live in the drought conditions where they could not survive.
Our Govt (who cares about whose politics) has done its best to encourage exporting as Australia is not been well placed on the world market for many years but the Govt shut down one of our best export markets.
Our biggest export earners at this time are Gas to Japan, Coal to India, Uranium to whoever wants it, and Iron Ore because some foreign nations now owns our mines. And the buck does not go here.
Okay, Gina R and her clan do make some royalties from Iron Ore in some places (something like 10c per tonne) but in reality, Australia as a whole has had very little gain from these exports of raw commodities.
Labor(ing) has done little to encourage us to develop as "the world market can offer us the same goods at a much lower cost."
I like to be able to make the choice of being able to buy my apples from Australia as against imports from NZ. I like to have the choice of being able to buy my oranges from Au as against USA. I like to have the choice of buying my beef from Au as against NZ.
Okay, I do love my Spanish olices, my Danish Fetta. My choice.
I want to be able to choose what I buy, not told "There is only one option. It is your choice which one you want."
