Just having watched half of Q&A on ABC, I gave up on everyone trying to blame everyone else on the subject.

Australia produces animals that other countries want to import from us. Reference was to the Four Corners program relating to on Indonesian abbatoirs method of killing the livestock that their (the Indonesian) feedlots have produced further than the Australian breeders have produced.

If anyone has followed on from the original story, the abbatoir in question had not realised that a more humane way of killing the cattle is achievable until this documentary occurred. They have changed their ways to what us Westerners consider "more humane."

Indonesia buys our young cattle, now down to 350 kgs, and they fatten them up in their feedlots to a suitable weight for slaughter.

The result of our Govt's ban on live export meant that many of our cattle were destined to try and live in the drought conditions where they could not survive.

Our Govt (who cares about whose politics) has done its best to encourage exporting as Australia is not been well placed on the world market for many years but the Govt shut down one of our best export markets.

Our biggest export earners at this time are Gas to Japan, Coal to India, Uranium to whoever wants it, and Iron Ore because some foreign nations now owns our mines. And the buck does not go here.

Okay, Gina R and her clan do make some royalties from Iron Ore in some places (something like 10c per tonne) but in reality, Australia as a whole has had very little gain from these exports of raw commodities.

Labor(ing) has done little to encourage us to develop as "the world market can offer us the same goods at a much lower cost."

I like to be able to make the choice of being able to buy my apples from Australia as against imports from NZ. I like to have the choice of being able to buy my oranges from Au as against USA. I like to have the choice of buying my beef from Au as against NZ.

Okay, I do love my Spanish olices, my Danish Fetta. My choice.

I want to be able to choose what I buy, not told "There is only one option. It is your choice which one you want."

Every time I see strong responses about how animals are treated, I always reflect on how poorly humans are treated around the world, and I beg to question “which should be getting more attention”?

They each deserve attention with outcry and outrage when necessary.

Animals are voiceless and its up to humankind to watch out for them.

Those who care already put their money where their mouth is on both fronts, plus the volunteers who travel to countries to assist the poor (people and animals).

Its not about choosing who or what to support, all creatures on this planet deserve to live with dignity and respect.

Prowler's words could not have stated my opinion better ..

Live export is a disgrace and should be banned for perpetuity.

The only good thing that has come from the ban is we may one day get some cheaper good quality meat! for Australians!
In that case the Ban was all worthwhile.

Unfortunately not!
You see we have this government system that allows so much for local farmers and so much for export farmers? This includes fruit and vegetables.
Which means we pay top dollar for everything and the export stuff if not sold goes too landfill?

Catch22

Catch22
Boggles the mind all the fruit and veg that get thrown out, tonnes of bread going to pigs, and the butchers would eventually have to throw their meat out too, but guess that would go to pet food.
I'll never understand. Why Export when we import so much?

It all comes back to debt ... if we only imported , we'd go broke by world standards ... so by exporting we gain world value revenue .. so we stay liquid ... trouble is the Oz government shafts its own where as other countries seem to look after their people better ...

Nothing wrong with exporting ... just don't export it if it is still living ....

AgentAjax: Your attitude is great but is it reasonable? Life stock is a product of Australia in a same way every other product is, living or nonliving . we have no right to that product after the money has exchanged hands and it has left our shores. We can attach instructions to it, like the best humane way of killing an animal along with few recipes but that is it, that is all the rights we theoretically should have to that product. OR we are imposing conditions which may be against someone else’s methods and beliefs. if you want to talk about “humane” why don’t we start with six long week sanctions Australia imposed on Indonesia, where farmers were forced to shoot 5.000 cattle per day and bury them in pits. Would you say that was more humane then feeding a overpopulated reign. OH and if you didn’t know all of those cattle that were killed were either straight from birth or getting to six months old.

We could go into the dairy industry which is far worse!!!!

If we ban live export AA then there are no problems .... for us, them or the poor animal ... there is too much misery for the animal, its just humane to slaughter them here and save them all that grief and fear ..

Animals like us 'FeeL' ... why make them suffer is what I say ...

Sanctions are a whole other issue ... and have nothing to do with live export mate !! ...

Yes there are plenty of problems; due to our high wages we would kill the beef and lamb industries which economically we rely on. Countries which choose our products do not get payed weekly what we get payed per day. There is no secret buying livestock, doing your own transport is the only affordable way to go for many of these countries and keeping our economy turning.

In relations to comment on sanctions – again, NO, it is not a different subject. The sanctions happened due to the fact people of Australia were appalled the way Indonesia was treating our animals and called for it, only to have adverse effect.

Everything sounds good in theory as long as you are not prepared to look at the whole picture.
