serene56: Theory shmeory .. suck it up Australia and man up Be a leader for a change and change the way most Aussies think - this is apparently the lucky country so how about thinking outside the comfortable square and get a conscience
It simply does not work like that. When I first seen the video on how brutal our animals were treated I got down right angry and I was on the side with the rest of Australia, then I seen the other side of the story on how vital the beef industry is to us…. Even the animal rights had to back off!!!

We are losing every year allot of our industry overseas due to our labour costs. Our beef industry has kept us ticking over when mining wasn’t in demand. What we’ll become of us if we lose the cattle industry? A third world country??? Like I said it all sounds good in theory but for a change we have to put our emotions aside and do what is best for this country, and hope in time the rest of the world will pick up their standards.

You cannot put profit over being humane AA ....

some of those animals have broken legs from the truck ride from the holding pen to the ship ... before they leave here ... They must be in absolute agony from then on ... If the beef industry goes belly up well so be it, because bloody cruelty is not the answer ...

This is not about emotions ... its about being caring ...and decent ..

At the end of the day , as cruel as it sounds Im not prepared to see a nation suffer over animals which are destined to be on our plate before they reach maturity anyway.

That’s the thing Lookin we should be able to buy our beef at low prices, at a much lower price than what we are paying for now, even with high wages. The problem is added costs-fuel price and transport ….how many times is transport involved? Electricity at a much higher rate (refrigeration) Safety- major cost these days for every industry. Then there are different food regulating departments involved. I only named the few obvious costs and then there are hidden ones. Im afraid we have out priced ourselves.

Im not sure if I have these figures right, but I think Western Australia exports around 280.000 head of cattle alone per year . that is some numbers without including other states or lamb. Could we truly cope with a 24.000 population to supply the demand and still offer it low prices?

Aussies has nearly always had cheap meat to eat because we produced it here in Australia.

When the Iron Curtain came down some 30 years ago, NZ lost its venison market because Poland could then export venison to Europe. One economy lost there. The EU also saw dairy products from Europe being so cheaply sourced (more often than not heavily subsidised by the Govternments) that NZ lost that market. Oops, there goes NZ.

Aust under Hawke and Keating saw Import Taxes abolished. There goes our footwear and clothing/material industries. And what has happened to OUR Big Australian, BHP. Cannot compete on the global market so has sold out and we have cheaper imports.

We did have "The Big 3" car manufacturing industries here in Aust. But we can no longer really support any of them with the way the global marketing is done these days.

India and the Phillipines have the techno savvy to do solve our techno problems. There goes our techno industry.

Thailand can land pre-cooked chicken in Aust less than we can produce it here. There goes our poultry industry.

Aust has come down to basically "what can we export so we can import foreign goods?" Okay, the imports are cheaper than locally produced goods.

The live export trade of cattle is over-rated on the cruelty bit. Young cattle may be tightly penned in on the transport ships but this is to ensure that in the 1 day of travel, they are less likely to fall and be trampled.

Indonesia has set an import limit on the weight of cattle to 350 kgs. While this may sound a lot, beef is usually around 650kgs before slaughter (that is the correct term).

The station owners here in Australia were, on the whole, appalled about what the 4 Corners program showed. The slaughter house (for want of a better name) depicted had not realised that there was a better way to do things until they were shown a more humane way.

Is it "humane" to use a cutting blade to cut asparagus from stalks from a 100 year old plant? Do not plants have feelings?
