I was watching ACA last night who were making a big deal out of an apartment block who refused to allow people with children or expecting children to buy into it. Apparently this is against the law but I question why? Why can't people who aren't fans of screaming annoying children have a peaceful space to live? And does this mean I have every right as a mother with kids to maybe buy into a retirement village? Surely they can't discriminate against me because I am not old??

When I went to China, I holidayed without my kids because I wanted respite from them, then I had to put up with someone else's kids who were on the tour with us. It didn't ruin my holiday, but it would have been a hell of a lot better without them there.

I get sick of hearing about people who want to get into something that is not for them. Why can't we leave people in their comfort zones without having to interfere? If you love kids so much, go and live next to a creche or something.

I was a single dad for years and finished raising my kids .. they are all young adults now and this is wonderful ...

I love kids I really do ... I cannot eat a whole one but I love them all anyway ...

BuT there is a time and place for kids when I am out ... If I were out with kids I'd take them to kid friendly eatery for lunch or dinner ..

I have been out at eXpensive restaurants over the years and lets be honest its the ambience we also pay for and I have had to listen to squealing, snotty nosed lil brats carrying on and running amok ...

McDonalds fine I expect it and thats ok ... at over a hundred bucks a plate I don't eXpect it and neither do I want it ...

So yeah I agree there should be no go zones for kids ... but then in fairness to all the good kids out there that know how to behave and do have good table manners, I guess my comments are harsh ... though to me are fair enough ...

I have never understood taking babies into the cinema, where they just screech and screech and SCREECH !! ....

I understand that you are still entitled to go out to dinner and other activities when you have children and of course if you don't do these things then they don't learn appropriate behaviour in those environments but I just don't see how other people are not entitled to create a space that caters for their preferences without some smartarse bucking the trend because they get their noses out of joint that they are not included.

If you can prove screaming children cause cancer like smoking than you could probably keep them out of shopping centres as well. laugh

As the way the new age parenting is these days and social expectation on discipline, I agree children should be kept out of restaurants especially when people are paying high prices. BUT do we have the right to prevent people of living where they choose to live??? I don’t know- convince me that my money as a parent is not of equal value. conversing

It was an apartment building. As a parent, I would choose to have some room to move, a bit of a yard at least so the kids weren't cooped up inside all the time. It isn't about money, it is about freedom of choice that you can live in an environment that suits you and I don't think that asking for a peaceful environment without noisy kids is too much to ask for. I have kids and I wouldn't expect to live in an environment full of people who don't know what it is like to have children anyway. It is just looking to make bad blood with your neighbours but if you are a person who likes to invite drama into your life, then why not, do it just to piss people off.

A double paradox! How can anyone exercise a choice without taking away a choice?

True, but some people just go out of their way to take away other people's choices. It isn't as though there aren't plenty of places that you cannot have children so why ruin it for people who don't want to have to deal with children? You're just an a**hole if you want to go out of your way to make peoples lives miserable.

Yes agree if the only reason for your move is to P people off but I don’t think people who don’t rent but buy into the property would make poor choices. What happens if you move into the unit, organise your life around it… work..etc and then you find out you are going to become a parent. What do you do then?

I read all the above post agreeing with everything that was said. If a place excludes certain people for the benefit of those choosing to be there because it excludes certain people. I.e. kids, pets, smokers etc, then shouldn't they have that choice? As long as there are places provided in the community for every group of people and those groups don't feel their area is inferior to the other areas, then everyone is being treated fairly.

The last post by AA identifies where the real problem comes in. When peoples circumstances change and they no longer fit the criteria of where they are, should they move? Well fairs fair, if they knew those were the rules when they joined the group or moved into the dwelling then, yes, they should.

We have a community on the north coast that doesn't allow pets. Its a strata title community and that's the rule. Those that buy into it know that and perhaps even choose to live there for that very reason, that's their choice. Why would you insist on living there and then complaining cause you want a pet. Go elsewhere. It's just commonsense if you ask me.

I agree with you snaggs, if a property is deemed a no-go zone for kids, then so be it.

I'm sure I've read that many holiday locations and cruises are also aimed at adults only, and I for one wouldn't be interested in 'family-friendly' vacations.

But if I did go there, I wouldn't complain as I made the choice. However I wouldn't expect those with children to whinge about the holidays aimed at people who prefer not to have them around lol.

So many people want to complain about 'issues' these days, and sometimes you have to wonder whether they have too much time on their hands? laugh

Asking for no animals and no children is entirely different social expectation.

Should I be able to advertise for no labours because I don’t want to be confronted by dirty work clothes? No Holden drivers because Im a Ford fan? No Asians, Mexicans or Italians because they scream when they speak?????????? laugh

You don’t think Holiday dwellings come under a different acceptance ?

Sure, it's a different ballgame I know, but there are probably some in the community that would have a problem with anti-kidism there too laugh

Most likely not as usually the same destinations offer pet and kid friendly places. Any place which cannot be used as a permanent residence can offer lifestyles for short period of time. That is the reason its called a holiday. laugh

Look at it this way AA, your a landlord with a choice of two potential applicants. There is no law that makes you choose one over the other. If there was that law in itself would be discriminatory.

Do you remember the agent that advertised, I think in NSW a rental property “ single mother with kids cannot apply” I think his office was totally trashed and lost his business.
