Heard the chat on the radio the other day about leaving home? One dad rang in and said they bought their son a couple of suitcases for his 21st birthday present "Time you moved out son?" laugh

So how old where you when you left home and where did you go to?

I left home for the first time, I went back on and off for years, when I was 19 yo. I went to work in a hotel in Torquay on the south coast of England, the same place, Torquay, as they made the Fawlty Towers series and believe you me the hotel I worked in could have given Fawlty a run for its money laugh laugh laugh

It was the time of Punk Rock, think it was about 1976 the year of the Queens Silver Jubilee or something and we had a 6'2" Punk waiter in our hotel who was totally over the top. He was hilarious, the head waiter was terrified of him even though he was harmless he was just so unpredictable and anti-establishment. peace

Worked there for 6mths then spent an idyllic 3 mths travelling some of the Greek Islands. cool

And that is a whole nuther story for another day angel wave

Left home at 18 to live with my future husband.

My Mum was a widow and it was only her and me during my teenage years so we were very close.

I'd worked hard after leaving school and completing a course at tech, bought a car and still think...

Why did it seem that we were so mature at that age when 25 year olds now are still treated like children by their parents confused

Had my children in my early 20s and loved every single minute of being a young Mum, I reveled in it purple heart

Took them everywhere, animal parks, museums, art galleries when they were old enough to appreciate them and they each have a love and appreciation for art, music, books and everything that those things have to offer.

We're very close, we three, and as I raised them when I was only young myself, by the time I reached 40 they were independent and I was off out to explore the world! elephant joy party happy place

What an amazing life it's been so far daydream

I left home at 20. My parents had taken me to the Netherlands when I was 15 and I hated it there. So as soon as I had enough money I hot-footed back to Australia.

left home at 17 cause I was sooo grown up (not). blues

I went back a few times but never lasted long. Had the taste of freedom. grin

Geez I had two babies, 15 months apart by the time I was 23. doh

Nothing like a couple of babes to make you grow up quick. sigh

But looking back I wouldn't have it any other way. Looking forwards to a grandchild and still fairly young...well me thinks anyway laugh

I think generally women are healthier for child rearing when in their 20s anyway. That's what nature intended.

Looking back I was young. conversing

Left home at 15 road my push bike across the bush ranges dirt gravel dusty road just the clothes on my back I road aprox 90 klms from one town to another to my real blood relatives where my sisters and my brother lived & aunts & uncles. I was an Orphan - foster child a ward of the state and I had a terrible childhood was fostered 4 times but lets not dwell on the past.

Anyhow I finally made it was so thirsty and tired so my family all rallied and looked after me then I went to Sydney when I was 16 with my Aunt and Uncle who were very good to me. I married my first hubby at 19 and had my son we divorced 4 years later too young to be married sad flower neither of us at fault really then I had a great time being single for a few years raging out in Sydney Then one day realize I need to take a chill pill and be a better mom so me and me boy got on the Indian Pacific (train) and came across the Nullabor Plains to Perth in 1977 and never looked back I met My daughters father and spent eight years with him didn't work him being Irish but we wont hold that against him rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Then a few years later in the 80's met my last hubby and had a wonderful 20 years raising each others kids having the greatest of pleasure of running a horse stud etc! All in all I have had a wonderful and exciting life & it ain't over yet banana peace

I left home when I was 16, parents were fantastic. I had a wonderful upbringing. However, I was a rebellious teen at the time, and it was totally unacceptable to still be living with your parents beyond that age in the 70's. I managed, though can remember living on one packet of rice for a whole week, was still raging out at pubs every night and working every day though. Good times and it set me in good stead for the remainder of my life up to now. Today's teenagers are such "cotton wool" people, they couldn't possibly exist without their parents doing everything for them, including giving them free board, with all the extras until they are 25! (or sometimes older)

Hi Freowave

So agree with you... totally unacceptable to still be living at home right up to mid twenties.. like is happening now..

But to be fair... we had a choice of jobs back then, it was not hard to find work, so we could leave..

and by golly, we did..

but in my case, my parents left me at 16... home.. and took off with the rest of the family... and for a bliss year, I was at home alone...

I went to school and came home, and cleaned etc... they sent me money each week, an allowance to live on... and I had to account for all the money... damn... I was doing reconciliation statements back then...laugh

But when the family came back to live at home, I moved out.. Fancy Mum thinking that I just would fall into being a subordinate being again... not a chance..

laugh

But after a few years, I did move back home.. for a very short while, just because I was getting married... and then off again, back into the world for travel and exploration...

Wow... look at all the above posts... we all took off independently ... cheering

We got some gumption us lot... cheers

wow cant believe how grown up we all were back then, it shows though some of us had hard lives but we bounced back and became the adults we are todaythumbs up

when we came to australia my kids were 9 and 10, and all we had were 4 suitcases and $700 in the bank. we knew no-one and had no jobs to come to, never had even been here before laugh it wasnt long before we both had jobs and bought our first house.we left all our families and friends for a new start and a good place for our kids.
that was back in 1990, so we paid full price airfares not ten pound pomsrolling on the floor laughing would have been easier if we had been convicts, could have got here for nothinggrin and here i am 22 years later banana
