hoolet: Why do some people have a hate for a taste, but their offspring do not acquire this distaste????
e.g. my Mum hated milk, parsnips and mushrooms.....she couldn´t even bear to cook the mushrooms!!!!!!
I love all three.
But...........I remember disliking olives when I first tried them, then eventually acquiring a taste.
I love liver..........but my daughter hates it. She used to dislike brussel sprouts, but now likes them.
Another point........my friend´s husband hated cheese all his life, but, when he got altzheimers he forgot he didn´t like it and ate it!!!
I think we definitely can acquire a taste or appetite for particular foods. Just look at all the different foods that people consume around the world .... so perhaps much of it is what we are exposed to as children. As well, I've heard that it sometimes takes exposing our children to a certain dish a number of times before they become accustomed to it. If they say no once, and we don't let them try it again, then the opportunity is taken away.
So perhaps its not so much our tastes buds, but more what we think about a food ..... although as I write this, I think about liver and go yuk! lol its the smell, taste and texture that revolts me and for anyone reading this who makes me eat it when I'm old and suffering from dementia grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

my father owned a butcher shop and when i worked there the whole liver would come in and i would have to not only trim it and cut it into slices but part of that included removing all the TUBES within it.

OMG I'm not feeling too well right now BUT I know I can count on you to shield me from ever consuming it unknowingly!
My grandpa used to eat pigs feet and I've seen a few things when I worked in the Chinese restaurant that made me want to hurl. I still think though that a lot of it is what we are exposed to as kids when we have no choice.

When I was raising my girls we always had a rule about food. You dont have to eat anything you dont like BUT you have to honestly try everything. Its amazing how varied and adventurous their taste in food is now.

Good method to use BUT I do have to admit that I've never made liver for my daughter!! So I know that I've influenced some of her tastes just based on what I've presented to her. She has been adventurous to try foods outside of home, so she actually eats things that I've never even tried.

That´s how I was with my daughter, and she has never acquired a taste for liver. However, I did used to make her eat 2 brussel sprouts every Christmas...!!!!!!!!! The only thing I remember not liking when I was a child was kedgeree (a rice, smoked haddock and egg dish for the uninitiated).

We all have different amounts of taste buds on our tongues varying from around 30-90 per square centimetre. It is believed that those with the higher proportion of taste buds (supertasters) are less likely to have a sweet tooth because they are more sensitive to taste. This could also explain why our tastes vary so much.

that is how i was raised and i raised my daughter same ... you have to try it to be able to say you don't like it.....
I used to hate cooked peas but totally loved eating peas straight off the vine. I since have developed a taste for them cooked as well. Although I have tried, I cannot acquire a taste for olives or sage. Those are the only two things that really spoil a meal for me. I remember once I barbequed liver much like you would do steak. My kids thoroughly were enjoying the meal until they found out it wasn't steak. I could eat liver once a week but my kids(now adults) still will not eat it. lol
