I do think a bit about his harsh imprisonment for all those 27 years for what he believed in. For him to live to this age and make a difference is a miracle.

It must be realised that he was a decendant of the Thembu royal family. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.

The Thembu at the time were not the most populous native people of the South Africa region. The Zulu's were the most endemic people of the country. At the time, they did support the Govt of SA policy of arphatide. They did not like the subservient tribes or the emmigrating tribes having a say in how their country should be run.

I do admire the man for what he has done for his tribe, his country and world predudious as a whole. I just do not support the violent actions of his followers.

Trouble is with such a huge following you are going to get violence along with peaceful followers sigh

He was wrongly imprisoned but still after all those years he still came out a leader for his people thumbs up

Someone leading a bombing campaign against government targets is hardly innocent.

He was caught and was happy to be a martyr for his people. His treatment in prison, like so many native prisoners, was horrendous and the length of his sentence was far beyond what others got.

Latest I heard they have Mandela on life support - why? he is 94yo.

Maybe it was his choice dunno but honestly, what is the point, chances of him recovering are very, very slim and he must be very very weak?

JMHO but when it's time, it's time.

I did hear that in his culture they don't even talk about him not being here while he is still alive? Positive way of thinking I guess.

Hope he goes peacefully and is not in pain.

He'd be drugged and most likely non respondent he'd be pain free just a matter of time at 94 an that ill in hospital they wouldn't allow him to suffer. sad flower

Just heard one the news that Nelson Mandella's update according to his daughter he has greatly improved and they are now looking at him being able to go home , that is an amazing recovery especially with lung problems at his age. Although saying that my friend is in the UK ATM with her mom she is 95 yrs old too and has had lung complications in and out of hospital at times and still going strong as can be considering her age , this is my friends 2nd visit to the UK to see her ailing mother in just over a year thinking it would be her last time to be with her , sadly though she has now got the beginnings of dementia & starting to affect her quality of her life sad flower
